Same books about war are terrible. Some authors who write about wars are even more terrible. When you read a fine book about war, for instance the Eagle has landed, it is definitely no guarantee that other books from the same author are worth reading. This is book about most trivial and less trivial things which happen in war. I did enjoy it and I think I am going to enjoy the last pages.

I actually signed up for a bookring of this book. It got stalled by the person who was supposed to send it to me. So ofcourse I took this one with me!

I've read it now and I thought it a very interesting read. It's very impressive and most of all it seems very real.

It just arrived at my doorstep. And it was my lucky day, because in total I received 4 books. This one will be read asap. I don't think it will take long.

Journal Entry 13 by wingdutch-bookwing from Heerenveen , Fryslân (Friesland) Netherlands on Tuesday, December 1, 2009
This one took longer than expected. I read a lot of pages, then put it away. Just to finish it today.
This book doesn't have the impact on me as it has on some other people. I did enjoy it however. I already got the next persons adress. This one will be sent tomorrow.

The book arrived today

December 8:
Finished reading the book yesterday. It is a wonderfull book to read. especially liked the first chapter about the things they carried. Great to read a book about the war that is not about heroic stuff, but more about what the war does to people without getting to sentimental.

I already have Oedde's address so I will mail it to her asap

I have a few other books to read before this one but with the Christmas holidays coming up I don't think that should be a problem :)

Journal Entry 18 by Oedde from Darmstadt, Hessen Germany on Tuesday, January 19, 2010
A very good book in my opinion. The structure is unusual and interesting.
I especially liked the narrator's (and in this case probably also the author's) thoughts on storytelling, truth, lies, and make-belief. I am one of those people who won't read a book just because it tells a 'true story' or because it's based on somebody's 'actual' experience. I prefer utterly untrue stories. If a story is good, then it's good and that's enough. If it's good it is believable and thus possible.

Really enjoyed this book and am glad to have ticked it off the 1001 list so thanks for the opportunity to do so! I don't know much about the Vietnam War but this book pretty much confirmed my suspicions about time spent crawling through paddy fields and jungle looking for an indeterminate enemy while really wishing you were at home, at college or basically anywhere but being the FNG in the DMZ. My friend is moving to Vietnam next month so i think a copy of this book will make an ideal present for him.

Just arrived in the mail today from Tanzania! Thanks so much for passing this along. I've wanted to read this book for a long time. I had joined the original ring/ray that had stalled, so it was a nice surprise.

I'll get to it very soon and then mail off to next on the list. Hmm.. I recently mailed a book from another ring to this same person, but will probably have to ask again for an address.

Journal Entry 36 by SeamonkeyofTVCH at Fountain Valley, California USA on Tuesday, February 22, 2011
I thought this was so well written and illuminating. Having lived through that time with all the turmoil, the draft, the lottery for the draft.. I remember well my brother getting a very low number and being called fit even with a terrible knee problem, so he went into the National Guard where the boot camp completed the wrecking of the knee but finally some officer noticed when he literally fell down stairs when the knee gave out and sent him to the hospital and he was eventually discharged. I guess so many were claiming nonexistent injuries..

Anyway, gritty and real, somehow dreamy in a nightmareish way. Words and images.. well worth the read and the long wait.

Thanks so much for resurrecting this ring!

I have PM'd oldreader, who is next (and who co-incidentally was next on the list for my last bookring..) and await her info and also to know she still wanted to be in the ring...

Then I'll ship it off to her.

Well, it's been more than a month and this one is still here. I have read it though. I did enjoy the author's perspective on the Vietnam War and his writing style. Sometimes it is the small things that make a story interesting, and I like the fact that he comes right out and tells people "You will never understand how it is to be in a war, but here is what you can understand."

Thanks for sharing and sorry for keeping it hostage for so long. It will go out to the next reader in a week or so.

A.memoir of Vietnam Nam. A difficult subject. I found it repetitious, although enlightening. A veteran's recollections of the horrors our young soldiers endured during this senseless war.

Journal Entry 51 by FreePages at Canberra, Australian Capital Territory Australia on Saturday, August 3, 2013

Hubby and I both enjoyed this book.
We've both read quite widely on Vietnam and the Vietnam war, even though we were both quite young during the war, being born in the late 60s. The war still looms quite large in the mindset of Australians of that generation and my generation. Like in the US, Australians were conscripted and participated in the Vietnam war, our country being involved with the US as part of the ANZUS treaty. My boss was in the Australian Navy at the time and fortunately my father and uncles were not called up.
Much like in the US, there was a huge backlash on returning soldiers and many Australians did not support our participation in it. And I agree it was all pretty senseless.
This novel was overall better prose and the subject matter was delivered in a better style then many other novels I've read on Vietnam. For quite a short book it delivered quite a punch. Although, it seemed all very familiar due to my other reading on the subject.
A very worthwhile read, I'd really recommend it to others who haven't read much on Vietnam or the war.
Thanks for the opportunity to read it, and for everyone's patience while I got to it. :-)

I've PMed the next person on the ray, bookworm76, when I hear back from them, I'll send it on.
