A Complicated Kindness

This was a very unusual book. It has been compared to Catcher in the Rye because the narrator is an alienated youth. I didn't find Nomi as interesting a character as Holden Caulfield. The life she led in a Mennonite colony in Manitoba was bizarre! I thought the teens would be closely guarded against drugs and booze but the exact opposite is true according to this account. A rather disturbing story but in the end you are led to believe that she will survive and perhaps thrive.
