The shades of William Wordsworth and Fletcher Christian (his old schoolmate) entangled in a modern mystery? I couldn't have resisted this one - even if it hadn't been written by a favourite author. She *is* writing at much more length, though, for better or worse. (Probably better!)

This is reserved for a bookring after reading - any more takers?

Now finished, at blinding speed and with great enjoyment. This caught my interest from the start and held it through 450 pages. (The solution didn't fall flat, but it did seem a bit rushed and bland.)

Here are the BOOKRING participants to date:

Dunzy (Vancouver), Canada
pammykn (Florida), USA
raeliz64 (Leicester), UK
lesezeichen (Dusseldorf), Germany
soleille (Leipzig), Germany
>>> blackteiwaz, Costa Rica.

Mailed to next lucky Bookringer. I really enjoyed this book's historical elements and the tidy (but teasing) way they were combined with a modern mystery. The characters all ring true -- even the ones we meet only through their writing.

I really enjoyed this! What a great premise, and the mystery bit was o.k. if a bit convoluted. Loved it!

Journal Entry 13 by soleille from Leipzig, Sachsen Germany on Thursday, October 18, 2007
What a great story! A bit of everything I like in each strand, mysterious literature, unknown corpses, history, a sense of menace...playing together in a symphony of suspense culiminating in a very satisfying finale- thanks for this read!
Will send on to blacktweiwaz tomorrow

The much awaited "last" JE for this ray. I'm sorry it took so long. I figured it wouldn't matter much if it took a bit longer for me to read, since there was nobody else after me, and I ended up almost forgetting I had it. Again sorry.
As for the book: I really enjoyed it. I like the way Christian Fletcher's story is interwoven through the whole book and the mystery was well constructed.
I looked online for other books by her, but for the reviews I read, they seem to be more sinister (which didn't stop me from adding a couple to my wishlist).
I now await orders: should I send this back? Or will it be re-offered at the forum for more readers to enjoy?

Very unlike other Val McDermid books that I have read. She is usually really intense and scary. This book has a boring and somewhat confusing beginning requiring a bit of flipping back and forth to keep track of characters. Once that is all "sorted" (this word gets used a lot in this book and feels stuck in my head now) then the book becomes more interesting but never really loses its formulaic feel. The bad guy could have been one of several people but it doesn't really come as a big surprise. Also, almost every chapter is 10 pages long. It made me feel like the author set a 10 page minimum for herself each day. I didn't lose myself in the story, I was always aware of the author in the background. The concurrent Mutiny on the Bounty story feels detached and even the Woodsworth manuscript, which is central to the story, gave me a ho-hum sort of feeling. Sorry, but it is not Val McDermid's best work.

Oh, me. I'd really been looking forward to this. Less a mystery and more an opportunity to expound on the author's knowledge regarding Wordsworth and Fletcher Christian. For a while I completely forgot it *was* a murder mystery novel and wondered when they'd introduce the dead man.

Supplemental characters didn't engage my interest. I read far enough to find out each person's sketch, then skipped to the end to find out what happened to all of them. That was enough.
