Just received from EarthAngel! I got acquainted with Atwood through BookCrossing, and intend to continue the friendship. Thanks, too, EarthAngel, for the very cool bookmark with the pictures of Newfoundland. I especially like the puffin.
Thank goodness for this book! I had to go to Springfield on business today, and took the train. Of course, I needed some reading material, and threw this in my bag. Got into it on the way, and then the train was 2 1/2 hours late leaving Springfield! So between the wait at the train station and the trip home, I finished it.
I liked it, for the most part. Atwood is an excellent story-teller. This is the second of her books I've read, the other being Lady Oracle. In each, there is a theme of duality; the characters have multiple faces. Here, the split is between Elaine Risley's adult self and her 9-year-old self. While I found it good, it was not as satisfying as Lady Oracle, I think because the motivations of the other characters were not as clear, and because Elaine's obsession with the experiences of her younger self and friends was not adequately explained.
