The families of Palos Verdes seem to have everything on the surface, looks, wealth, and the beautiful ocean all around them. Below the surface, though, it seems there is only great unhappiness and cruelty. Medina is bullied at school by the "towel girls" and abandoned by her father, who trades in his wife for a younger model. Her mother is too busy gorging and feeling sorry for herself to notice her own son's slide into drugs and mental illness. At the end, all Medina has is herself and the waves, but she seems to come through it all.

Caught at Meetup. I enjoyed and was aggravated by this book. Medina has so much, yet so little.

Picked this up at Vancouver's Bookcrossing Meetup. Sorry it's taken me so long to register!
A wonderful first novel by a very talented author. From the get go I was sucked into Medina's life and as the story develops and her life gets progressively more difficult, it's believable, even if some of the events seem so far fetched as to actually be believed. An amazing read.

To echo a previous journaler, I found the book both aggravating and enjoyable. There was perhaps too much reliance on stereotypes. I also found it interesting that this was a discard from the West Van public library, Palos Verdes being (again in a stereotypical way) West Van with surf.
