A Dying Light in Corduba (Marcus Didius Falco Mysteries)

The eighth in the series of crime novels set in Ancient Rome and featuring the classical sleuth, Marcus Didius Falco - a series I have been enjoying very much.
When a man is killed and Rome's Chief of Spies left for dead, Falco's investigation plunges him into the fiercely competitive world of olive-oil production. Nobody was poisoned at the dinner for the Society of Olive Oil Producers of Baetica, though in retrospect this was quite a surprise…
Inimitable detective Marcus Didius Falco is back with a vengeance. Muggings, occur, a man is killed and Rome’s answer to Phillip Marlowe is plunged into the fiercely competitive world of olive oil-production. Political intrigue, an exotic Spanish dancer and impending fatherhood, all add to Falco’s troubles.

I’ve been reading this series in order (which I’d advise is the way to go) and now up to #8. Davis obviously does her research thoroughly and weaves the information into the story without any obvious and annoying info dumps. This one is set mostly in Hispania (Roman Spain) and centres around the vitally important olive oil industry.
What I like about this series is learning how ancient Rome operated, both at home in Rome and also in many different areas of its far flung empire. We see the workings and intrigues of governmental systems, as well as those of everyday citizens. And they’re a good mix of history, mystery, action, travel, and the personal ongoing story of Falco and Helena.
The books are not perfect by any means, but they’re fun and informative.
