An incredible adult fantasy. I think I will send this on a book ring then re-read it on its return.

So this took some time...

The Magic Toyshop has many elements of a book I would like very very much, but really failed to catch me. Or it did, as it annoyed me so unusually lot, that I really have to struggle until the end of it. Whole time I couldn´t figure out, who was this book aimed to. It was somehow as naivily nice reading for young girls, on the other hand it was so perverse - and that was actually only thing that really suprised me in the end. Also I couldn´t figure out WHEN was this all suppose to happen, it was not really ageless, but neither could I picture any decade.

And then I just have to point out these sentences here, as for me these are so over-the-top, that they made me laugh:
"She kicked a tin which lay on the pavement. It had once held pineapple rings, if its label was to be believed."
"He splashed her with the grey-green ocean of his eyes."

Somehow I hope nobody is going to splash me with the oceans of their eyes, if the color is to be believed. Or maybe I am not just native speaker.

However, the most curious thing... I haven´t read John Irving for ages, but while reading this I repeatedly got a huge hunger to read something from him. I woke up in the morning wanting to read Irving. And this continued until I finally finished the book and get my unpatient fingers to Garp. Curious it is, what these books do to us...

Thank you platypussj anyhow for giving me this adventure to my many emotions. So nive to have RABCK, please let me now if I can ever return the favour. And now there is already a next reader waiting for this toyshop...

Okay, so I write my first description here on bookcrossing:

I got this book to read two weeks ago and actually when I started it, I finished it in couple of days. I was sick and I had time to read and it kinda got me in to it. The reading experience was nice first of all because there vere many (british) english words to look up and learn, and something new is always intersting.

The book was fairytale for adults as said here before, romantic and amusing but a bit black and white and one-sided from the plot and characters. There was a simple lovestory that was cute, and the closed world of the toy shop and it´s people, that was mysterious. The basic thing that bothered me in the plot was that the character of uncle was left simply evil, I would have want to know more about him and why he was like he was.

I like the thing that there is some space for the imagination of the reader, but I think that in this book there were that kind of unexplained things that the story stayed a bit flat. But still it was interesting enough to make me read it quite quick.

What I really liked was the description of the little brothers autistic mind with the ships and the sea.

I´m sorry I can´t give my opinion about the language, that is not my mother tongue. Only thing is that how said before that there were many complicated words i had to look up. It can be that some key things were left out of my understanding because of the language.

But the main thing was that I enjoyed reading it, which is always good. So thank you for having it.

Book is returned to person who I got it.

Great writing with vivid descriptions, an adult fairy tale with some disturbing parts. The contrast in Melanie's life from the country to life in London was so different you fear for her and how she'll survive. An unusual interesting read.
