Bought this book in Turkey in a wonderful café/shop/cat garden during my holidays last October: the "Kedi Café" in Dalyan.
Its profits help shelter, feed and neuter the many stray cats over there.
The cats are not kept in benches, but are free to go where they want. You could find them throughout the whole garden. Look!
The place is run by an English couple, Chris and Mebrure Blom. They have their books stored in the open air, except in winter, when the garden is closed. That's why (I think) it looks a little as if it's been damp. I left some bookcrossing books there too. Offered to send more, but they said they would have to store them all winter till the next tourists come, so maybe I'll do that next spring.
about the book:
from Amazon.com:
Amber is the catalyst who makes the novel happen. She appears on the doorstep of the Smart's rented summer cottage in Norfolk, England, barefoot and unexpected. Eve Smart, a third-rate author suffering writer's block, believes that she is a friend of her husband's. Michael is a womanizing University professor, but he doesn't usually drag his quarry home. He thinks that she must be a friend of Eve's. Everyone is politely confused and Amber is invited to dinner. She is a consummate liar and manipulator who manages to seduce everyone in the family in some significant way.
Before writing The Accidental, Ali Smith wrote Hotel World, shortlisted for both the Orange Prize and the Man Booker Prize, and several short story collections. Her work is absolutely original, with a trademark quirky style, with whole passages that seem to have been bound into the wrong book and occasional historical asides completely outside the narrative line . Don't be fooled; with Smith, every word has a purpose.
Couldn't find the purpose, as her style of writing irritated me from page one, probably because of what's mentioned above (in italics). Haven't finished it. It's on a lot of wishlists though, so I will find a home for it, where it will be more appreciated, I hope.

Sent to lucy-lemon today as a rabck as no other interest for a ray. Enjoy
The book arrived today, and I put down Dickens to start this instead. It's amazing so far...! Thanks so much for sending this to me.
I left this in uni over christmas and then had so much work that I didn't get a chance to pick it up again. BUT after I'd finished all my essays on Friday, I curled up in bed with this and read it all through in one go. I loved it! A lot of people had said that they found the initial premise really interesting but that they couldn't get into the story. I didn't find this a problem at all, and in fact I thought that the structure was one of the best things about the book. I loved Astrid's narrative in particular.
All in all, amazing.
