Orlando: A Biography

Although there were some parts where this seemed to drag, all was made up for by the sheer loveliness of Wollf's writing and her humorousness.

In 1928, way before everyone else was talking about gender-bending and way, way before the terrific movie with Tilda Swinton, Virginia Woolf wrote her comic masterpiece, a fantastic, fanciful love letter disguised as a biography, to Vita Sackville-West. Orlando enters the book as an Elizabethan nobleman and leaves the book three centuries and one change of gender later as a liberated woman of the 1920s. Along the way this most rambunctious of Woolf's characters engages in sword fights, trades barbs with 18th century wits, has a baby, and drives a car. This is a deliriously written, breathless-making book and a classic both of lesbian literature and the Western canon.

This arrived a lil while ago, but i didn't have internet access at home so wasn't able to journal it. Really lookin forward to readin this...the gender situation seems very interesting!
I read a couple of chapters but wasn't really able to get into the book. I guess Woolf's style is not my cup of tea. I've only read a short biography by her called 'Flush', based on her dog, which was enjoyable enough. But the language and style here were too archaic and alien to me. Hopefully the next reader will enjoy it more!
This book is now back on the 1001 library bookshelf and can be borrowed by PMing prachitulshan:)

Thank you for this wish list book. I appreciate you sharing this with me even though it had to travel half way around the world.
Though I didn't find the book very enjoyable, I finished it. Prachitulshan kindly spent a lot of money to mail it to me. It is now going back to the 1001 library and off to another reader.
