With the convention of finding a diary in an elderly neighbor's attic trunk framing her story, Dallas creates a ripping good read from this fictional journal. Beginning in 1865, a week after her wedding in Fort Madison, Iowa, Mattie Spenser confides to her diary as she and her new husband travel by Conestoga wagon to the Colorado Territories. The building of a sod house; the births and deaths of children; the melting of narrow attitudes toward "loose" women, Indians, and Negroes; and the growth of Mattie as a person are all visible in these pages, full of what seems like genuine details of prairie life. There's enough about her complicated relationship with her husband to satisfy readers longing for romance and resolution. If some of the hooks in the tale, which include wife beating, incest, miscegenation, and adultery, are a bit contrived, the pace is lively and engaging.

I just got this book out of my mailbox today when I got home from work. Thanks so much Aisho! The first thing I'm going to do with it is lend it to my sister who said it sounds like a book she'll like too when I told her about it.

And where I live probably is somewhat like what's described in the book!

This was a really good book which I enjoyed immensely. It was so good that I didn't want to put it down even though I should have been visiting with the other people in the house! Thankfully, I finished it today.

It's now up for trade again.

I'm giving this book to my sister Ruth who is going to Oshawa, Ontario in two days and then will be going to Calgary, Alberta and touring that province as well as British Columbia with her son and his wife.

She's going to read it and then drop it somewhere out there in a wild release. Hopefully, she'll let me know where and when the drop is made.

The book was given to me, as I was going on vacation to Alberta, so my sister thought it would be great for me to read and leave the book in the west.

I recieved this book in Jasper Alberta from my mother in-law. I enjoyed the book very much, although I was disappointed that we never really know if Mattie was able to love Luke again, or if she stayed becaused that was all she could do. I must say that the book kept me captivated until the very last word, and left me wanting to know more.
I will be dropping this book in Grande Prairie Alberta. Hopefully so that someone else may enjoy.

I work in a Denny's restaurant as a server...my name is Kim. I served a table of pleasant ladies on a busy weekend. Actually it was labour day weekend to be exact. Labour day weekend of this year, 2003.
When the ladies had left I went to clean the table that I had served them at, and there laying on the booth was a book. I immediately grabbed it thinking one of those sweet ladies had forgotten her book. But something about this book caught my eye almost instantly after grasping it into my hands. A label had been taped on the front of this book.
"Free Book" were the two words that jumped at me. my curious eyes then wandered all over the book. There were instructions..."Please Read Me and Pass Me On. Flip inside this book for details!"
After discovering what this book really was I couldn't get it out of my head for the rest of the day. It was a wonderful one too actually! I took finding this book at that table to heart. I think this world and the people in it are losing bases with connecting with one another, we all have to live together and then one day die together. So why do we make the time in between so difficult?
I need to find some time to sit down and read, but then for sure I will be reading this book! I don't normally read these types of books, but I believe in opening ones horizons.
I can't wait to pass this book on to another!

~Kim.
p.s. I just wanted to thank whoever left me this book that day, whever you are ;)
