The book came to me through my lost love Vanya, a half Dutch, half Russian balletdancer, who left me on platform 10 of the Amsterdam trainstation to begin her long journey to New York City. Her dream was to be one of the best balletdancers in the entire world. After our tear drenched goodbye on platform 10, she gave me this book to remember her by. She told me she had found it in the theatre where she had danced a few nights before, and though she could not understand a word of Italian, it had touched her soul through the beautiful sound of the words when she read them aloud to herself. Before she got on the train she told me that if I ever felt lonely I should read this book and think of her. This was nine months ago and I still haven't heard from my love. I don't know where she has gone and haven't been able to find her. I read the book many times aloud to myself, to let the sound of the words comfort my aching heart. Now I find that I do not need the book anymore, I have to move on and leave the past behind me, as hard as that may be. I will leave the book for another lonely soul to find, somewhere in the beautifull city of Amsterdam.
