I found this fair-condition paperback on the book-sale rack at the Nashua Public Library; I've enjoyed some of Perry's previous mysteries and thought I'd give this a try. This one's one of her "William Monk" books, in which the protagonist is an ex-police officer who's still missing a good chunk of his memory, though he's been picking up clues about the man he used to be and doesn't always like what he discovers. The mystery here involves the sudden disappearance of the intended bride of a young man of good family, but soon turns into a murder investigation - with the woman herself the main suspect. There's a background plot about the attempts to advance the science of nursing, and a new character, a troubled young policeman whose own investigations sometimes puts him at cross purposes with Monk; I hope he's going to appear in later novels as he added some new viewpoints to those of the ongoing characters. Decent mystery all around, though I admit that I guessed most of the resolution after some fairly heavy foreshadowing. [Not 'til fairly late in the book, though!]
