Thank you so much for this book, DoveiLibri. I first heard about this book here on Bookcrossing and have been so wanting to read it. You are truly a good wish fairy!
This novel chronicles the changing circumstances of a prior, his master builder, and their community as they struggle to build a cathedral and protect themselves during the tumultuous 12th century, when the empress Maud and Stephen are fighting for the crown of England after the death of Henry I. The ambitions of the three men merge, conflict and collide through 40 years of social and political upheaval as internal church politics affect the progress of the cathedral.
Contains lots of historical detail of the Middle Ages, especially concerning architecture and construction. However, much of the dialogue of the characters (e.g., “Amen to that!” and “maybe yes, maybe no”) seems more in line with the 20th Century.
