Midwives: A Novel

A very good read. Really touched my heart.
I released this book to my friend Gail.
I couldn't put this book down. The tone was just right for me. The main character is an ex-hippie midwife who has a patient die in labor. She decides to perform an emergency c-section to save the baby (which she does). Needless to say, the medical profession does not like non-doctors to perform surgery, and she has to go to trial for murder. Thanks for this book, Ki, I loved it.

I just received this book in the mail today from gailflig. (Thanks Gail!!) I've been really looking forward to reading this book after seeing everyone fighting over it on the forum! ha ha I can't wait!
It took me a couple of chapters to really get into the book... but once it finally grabbed me... it was great!! This book, told from the perspective of a fourteen-year old girl, truly seems like a true story (it's not - it's fiction). The story of a young girl growing up a midwife's daughter, the hardship of watching your mother go through a trial... the sacrifices she was willing to make for her mother's freedom. It's an amazing story!!
I'm now passing it on to another fellow BCer!

Thank you, RaftQueen!

Midwives took me a few chapters in order to really get into it also. However, after the death of her patient, Charlotte Bedford, the reading sped up for me. (I stayed up to finish it last night...well, actually early this morning!)
Being written from the 14 year old daughter's point of view made it read like an actual event/trial rather than the fiction story that it is. The writing was excellent in that I never really knew the outcome of the trial. I may have tried to read too much into what the daughter said, but my "guess" on the final outcome sometimes changed from page to page.
This book is now going out to a bookring or bookray.

I received this book in the mail today as a part of a bookring. I'm looking forward to reading it, so much so that I'm putting aside my current reading to get started on it!
A gripping, suspenseful, and emotion-filled novel, "Midwives" is a true work of literary art. The story unfolds as a lay midwife is put on trial for the death of one of the mothers in her care, and is told from the point of view of her young teenage daughter. Chris Bohjalian spins a mesmerizing tale filled with heartache and joy alike. A real page-turner!
I've always been interested in midwifery ever since I did a project on it with an aspiring nurse-midwife in one of my university kinesiology classes. This book was amazing, however, and I had a hard time putting it down. It took me only two days to read, and after receiving it on Wednesday, this book will be in the mail this weekend to the next person on the bookring list!

Wow!!! I LOVED this book and just couldn't put it down! It is so incredibly amazing to realize this was written by a man - not only has he been able to get into the mind of a 14 yr old girl, but his understanding of birthing and it's options is absolutely fabulous! There were things that I didn't particularly like - the writing style in some ways wasn't my favourite, but because the topic is one of great interest to me, I was easily able to look past that. I now also have my own copy to pass around to my homebirthing friends because it is a must read for them, too!!

Wow, I just took a bunch of books out from the library, because I thought I would not have anything to read when I go camping. Looks like I can take them back and begin to read. I can hardly wait to read this book and pass it on.
Wow, on my goodness. What a read, I literally held my breath after I hit the climax of the book and I could not breath until I finished reading it. I am also amazed at how a male writer can write from a female's perspective. Definately a great read, especially if you are at all interested in Midwifery. I cannot believe the story of this woman and how she survived. Is it a true story?
I am passing this book along to eireannaigh. Enjoy the book.

Midwives is indeed a book of fiction. It is hard to believe because the dialogue and details provided make it seem so real.
Sorry, I have had this all weekend. I just hadn't the time to get it journaled. Have started reading and well let you know how it goes.
I did finish this rather quickly. I apologize, I have been away.
I will agree with the others, and say this is a real "page turner." I found myself wanting to slap Anne. I felt the book was a little jumpy sometimes, when she would go from past to present. I did however like the way she made you think that the outcome would be one way when it turns out not to be. Thank you for saying. Sorry I am not a very good critic. Will be sending this off the next person in line shortly.

After reading the back of the book, I realised that I saw the movie with Sissy Spacek. Actually makes me want to read the book more :) Its beside my bed to be read soon.
UPDATE: What a fantastic book! I just could not put it down - all housework has been neglected whilst I curled up and kept reading. Truly hard to believe that it is fictious story!

Just got it yesterday! As my schedule is increadbly tight, I'll read little bits of the book as my schedule permits, and will hopefully finish it by winter break time.
I'll journal again when I'm finished.

Wow!
What a wonderful book! It grabbed me straight from the beginning, and I absolutely loved the end! Actually, when I read the ending I put the book down and then had to pick it up again and re-read the last 2 pages again... it was just very powerful!
So, now that the bookring is all completed, bunzrun, let me know if you'd like me to create another bookray for it, or if you'd like the book back, or if you would like me to release it in the wild--either here in Kansas City or back home in Arizona.

Okay, I was going to release it in the wild, but my friend saw the book and asked if she could read it and later release... :o)
