At the age of 23, James Frey woke up on a plane to find his four front teeth knocked out, his nose broken, and a hole throught his cheek. He had no idea where the plane was headed nor any recollection of the past two weeks. An alcoholic for ten years and a crack addict for three, he checked into a treatment facility shortly after landing. There he was told he could either stop using or die before he reached age 24. This is Frey's acclaimed acccount of his six weeks in rehab.
Great read; too bad the author couldn't label it a memoir and not be accused of lying. Online the reader can find what is not true or pm me.

We got this in the mail up here in Maine yesterday. Thanks for sending it to us as a RABCK! My wife is an occupational therapist on the behavioral health ward here at the local hospital and is finding the book very interesting--she is already 76 pages into it.

My wife's rating. She found the book (largely set at what appears to be the Hazelden clinic in Minnesota) very engaging and interesting, and read it quickly. I printed out the author's statement made after this edition for her in which he discusses his embellishments, but my wife didn't seem too fazed by this. Thanks again to legs for sending it our way!

We got this book as a RABCK, so I thought it was the right thing to send it to someone else as a surprise RABCK. I mailed it out from Augusta today to a Bookcrosser who had it on her list. Watch to see where it goes next! A clue: it is headed south, but not back across the Mississippi River.

This was an amazing story. I was dubious about it because of all the controversy surrrounding the book (check out www.thesmokinggun.com), but even if parts are fictionalized it's still a captivating story.

This has arrived safely to me - thanks! And thanks, too, for the beautiful bookmark and the note. I'd heard a bit of the controversy over this book and am looking forward to finding out what the fuss was about.

WILD RELEASE NOTES:

I finished this a day or two ago. Although I had also read some of the reports disputing the truth of this story, and so I regard it as closer to fiction than a real memoir, it's still a compelling and cautionary read. It makes me wonder whether the information he gives over and over is right, for example, AA is only 15% effective after a year.

Unfortunately, based on the experiences of friends & family, I have seen lots of people who slip but most of them have made it much longer than a year so I don't know.

Anyway, I left this on a table with magazines in the rear waiting room of my favorite car repair place.
