By representing history through a form of fiction - at a time in Australia when the Right is waging a 'History War' in an attempt to corral and control the frame through which history is considered - Grenville's novel cuts through some of the more odious and contemptible arguments taking shape in Australia as well as reminding historian and reader alike that human interaction will always be the most brutal and virtuous way forward.

Grenville has a very crisp writing style, balancing a journalistic eye with a diary's memory. As the story unfolds, ruminations (that still resound in Australia today) start to take hold in character's hearts and minds as to who is who in this nascent configuration of a place and community. Grenville manages this movement deftly and with respect for her characters.
