Not normally my sort of thing, but I did really enjoy it and, unusually for me, it reduced me, (or perhaps exalted me) to tears.

This is very different from my usual kind of reading so I wasn't expecting to like it as much as I did. The characters are very interesting and strong and there's plenty to think about.

Update: 2 Octoer 2007 - I'm taking this book to the meeting in Chertsey this evening.

Thank you! It was happily stamped all over, not in the least by the mailperson.
I look forward to reading this book.

I read it almost in one go. It was rich, beautiful, thrilling - but I liked the film better, I have to confess. In this book Maggie is perpetuately in a state of irritation with her father's so called heathen ways, grasping hold of her christian religion, refusing all support if it doesn't come from her rosary and her prayers. This continued thoughout the book and became in turn a source of irritation to me. Shut up alright, I wanted to snap to her. Nevertheless, a rich novel. Thanks for sending it to me!
