From a review on amazon.co.uk
I remember absolutely loving this series when I was about eight or so, because to me it was just a magical collection. Rereading it as an adult however, I find that much of the magic is now hidden behind the Christian allegory that has suddenly become so glaringly obvious to me that I wonder why I never noticed it before. Not being at all religious, I now have to grit my teeth when reading these books and try to ignore the allegory, although as it has been so closely woven into the text this is rather hard to do! However, the books do retain something of their old charm for me, particularly with Pauline Bayne's simple but enchanting illustrations. My favourite has always been The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, which takes the characters on a quest across the sea to find the old lords of Narnia and features my favourite character of the books, the mouse Reepicheep. I have to admit that I can see why Disney chose to film The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe rather than the actual first book in the chronicles, The Magician's Nephew, which I have to confess I have always found inexplicably dull in comparison with the other books. I also find the sometimes blatant sexism in the series pretty irritating - for example, at one point (I won't spoil the books by saying when), Lucy is told that battles are ugly when women fight, and the girls frequently find themselves excluded from some of the most exciting action. However, for a child these books still retain their magic, I just warn you that as an adult, unless you are a Christian and a fan of allegorical writings, you may find this series somewhat heavygoing. On the whole I have to admit to siding with Lewis's friend Tolkien, who couldn't stand his friend's allegorical stories!
As far as this edition of the chronicles goes, it's a nicely presented and durable collection that should stand up to anything children can throw at it, so it is well worth investing in if you think the series will be read and reread.
