The Coven (Sweep, 2)

Journal Entry 1 by CandyDarling from Helsinki, Uusimaa / Nyland Finland on Wednesday, September 13, 2006
Morgan's powers are stronger than she ever imagined. She has visions, she lights fires with her mind, and her spells work miracles. When her boyfriend Cal, a member of the same coven, insists that witchcraft is in her blood, Morgan is confused. Her parents definitely aren't witches. They do seem to be keeping something secret, though -- something about Morgan's past.
From Publishers Weekly
This delectably dark pair of novels, first in the Sweep series, brings a supernatural spin to classic teen issues: popularity, romance, alienation and the search for self. Narrator Morgan, a high school junior in upstate New York, feels plain and ordinary, especially next to her flirty, drop-dead-gorgeous friend Bree. When Cal, a remarkably poised and handsome senior, transfers to their school, Morgan likes him almost immediately, an attraction she hides when Bree announces that she plans to win him for herself. Cal makes no secret of his belief in Wicca, inviting most of the junior and senior classes to join him in a Wiccan celebration. The rituals powerfully affect Morgan: could it be that she, like Cal, is a "blood witch" (a descendant of one of the seven great witch clans)? But how could she be a blood witch when everyone else in her family is so clearly not "magickal"? While Tiernan's ingredients are familiar, she stirs the cauldron with engaging, even cinematic, prose and sharply individuates her characters. She introduces the Wiccan material with some depth as well as with a skillful degree of ambiguity; readers will not know immediately whether or not the series embraces Wicca. Both books end on cliffhangers, fanning what will surely be an already keen desire to learn the whole story.

I liked the second book as much as the first. What annoyed me a bit were the diary entries at the start of each chapter, which seemed a bit lame, and not too believable. Other than that, I was hooked all the way through, and I couldn't stop reading until I got to the end. Too bad the ending was a total cliffhanger, so I guess I need to continue reading...

Mailed both books to CheriePie today!

Wow that was quick! Both books arrived here today. I've got a few books in front of them but will have no trouble squeezing them in in the next few weeks. I kind of like that about teen and young adult books, they're often quick 1 day reads and are easy to squeeze in even when the books owed pile is getting larger. LOL Thanks Candy Dahlin' ;)

Like the first book (Book of Shadows), this was fairly predictable with a simple plot. I had already figured out much of what was going to happen, with regards to Morgan's parentage and discovering her true powers. But like in book 1, the author introduced a couple of new dilemmas, one at the very end, which are left open for the sequel.
I can't say that I don't like these books, only that in some respects they seem even more simple than some of the other Young Adult books I've read, i.e. Harry Potter, Cirque du Freak. Perhaps it's just the characters attitudes towards one another... I'm not sure, but they seem so childish. Like in the previous book, I had a bit of a problem with the attitudes of certain characters, though it wasn't as extreme. Morgan's parents eventually came up with a fairly satisfactory explanation as to why they kept Morgan's adoption secret from her all this time. (I almost wanted to mark the previous comment as a spoiler, but it actually implies this right on the back cover blurb so I didn't think it's supposed to be a secret going in... I figured it was pretty obvious anyway by the end of book 1 if not earlier.)
That said, since these books can be read in a single day, two max, I don't feel they were a waste of time because they did entertain, and the ending did leave me interested as to what'll happen next.
***** SPOILER ALERT (highlight below to read) *****
Such as what kind of revenge do Bree and Raven have planned for Morgan? And why does Cal's mom have the Morgan's mom's Book of Shadows?
***** SPOILER ALERT (highlight above to read) *****
This will be heading to ladiibbug shortly along with a few other books going her way.
UPDATE 5-NOV-2006: Mailed to ladiibbug along with book 1 and another owed book on 6-Nov-2006 via Media Mail.

11/15/06 Arrived today - RSVD

As with #1, I enjoyed the learning more details of Wicca, tho I couldn't identify any errors or misperceptions in the author's writing due to my unfamiliarity with Wicca.
Morgan's Mom's reaction to her interest in Wicca was perfectly understandable to me, as I know LOTS of people who would react that way, i.e., Wicca = Witchcraft = Devil Worship??!! Yes, it's an uninformed, narrow minded reaction, but in my life experience, Wicca is not well known and is misunderstood. I hadn't even heard of Wicca until five years ago and thought it was "nice" witchcraft till an internet acquaintance began talking about her interest and study of it.
Strong plot, very believable characters, just a great read. Thanks for sharing, CandyDarling!

Definitely enjoyed this book as much as the first. I wish I had the third on hand to see what happens next.
Thank you for sharing these books, CandyDarling. Sorry for taking so long with them, I just haven't had much reading time lately. I will get them into the mail to Rianonne this week sometime.

I read that book nearly in one sitting (I'm at work so I had to hide it from to time to time when someone was entering my room) because like Morgan I wanted to know more :) The magick is developing, which I loved!
The cliff-hanger at the end left me wishing for having the other books handy to eat myself through this series.

Arrived safely in Switzerland, thanks! However, I'll wait for book #1 and read that one first before I get to this one...

Again, a very quick and enjoyable read, I got through it fairly quickly.
What a cliffhanger at the end! If anyone's gonna ring the rest of the series, please let me know! :-)
Will pass on to Margih as soon as I get to the post office next time.

Travelling to Finland. Enjoy!
Travelling to Finland. Enjoy!

Received the big envelope with two books and a surprise journal yesterday, thanks :)

After reading these two books I have a problem.. I need to find rest of the books of this serie! The first book´s end was a cliffhanger so it was nice to take the book number 2 to my hands and start reading. But I crave for more. There must be a teenager inside me as I really like teen books :) But, must say that these teen books are best for a long time.
Thanks CandyDarling for sharing these books. And they will move on to the next reader soon.
Thanks CandyDarling for sharing these books. And they will move on to the next reader soon.

Got both of the books on Friday, will start reading them as soon as I've finally finished Gone With The Wind for an another ring. :)

The books were very quick to read, which made them perfect for me while I was stuck in bed with the flu. :)
I've read many teen books resembling these ones (in terms of the "high school" plot, not the witchy parts) when I was a bit younger, but none of those have been as educational Wicca-wise as these are. The information on the religion is what really kept me tuned to the book, as I've always been kinda interested on the subject. I used to read everything I found concerning Wicca when I was a teenager (which wasn't very much in a Finnish semi-small town), but I haven't had time to explore it further lately - until I got these books.
So thanks, CandyDarling, for reminding me of my interest in Wicca!
Contacting the next person on the list immediately to keep the ring going.

Thanks ritao! I had already forgotten that I had participated in this ring. I will try to read the books as fast as possible.

Just finished reading this one a couple of minutes ago. After reading the first book I new what to expect. Seems like this one ended in cliffhanger, too. I will probably continue reading the series. Not right away, though.
I'll soon send these books to Rowenne.

Back to CandyDarling because no-one else answered.

Thank you so much for the book CandyDarling! I read this book #2 some time ago and ever since have wanted to read the rest of the books from the series also. I'll reread this after I've done with The Book of Shadows.

I'm glad I read the book again because I didn't remember everything that was going on and the plot in this book made more sense after reading how everything started. I'm definitely hooked!
Thanks CandyDarling once more for these lovely books. I'll see if lottuli accepts these first two books in this series, even though she as well has read the #2. It just feels right to try to keep these two books from separating.

I had read this book once already and I liked it also on the second time.
I somehow can really well imagine Morgan and I really look forward to read the rest of story.
I will keep this book together with the Part1 of the Sweep series and RABCK these to someone who I think would love to read these two.

Sorry it took me so long to post you a book; but now you'll get two instead of just one :D

Thank you very much. I think that these two books bring the total of books received to 50.

I think this book was better than the first one in the series. It had a bit more action and eventhough the plot was fairly easy to get I was entertained. In some ways Morgan's story reminds me of Harry Potter - not knowing who she is, having powers, and her family being hunted down and killed by something evil.
I'm a bit annoyed that I don't have the next book in the series so I won't know what'll happen to Morgan after she's been caught in the library. Hopefully, I'll be able to locate the rest of the book in the series in order to find out what'll happen.
I'll make sure that this book stays together with is companion. Thanks for sharing

I read the book and oh my god, i loved it. I couldn stop reading, it was so exciting and i can't wait to read the next books :)
I like how it continues at the place where the first book ended, a lot of books don't do that.
