A National and International Bestseller
A Globe and Mail Notable Book of 1998
On a chilly February day two old friends meet in the throng outside a crematorium to pay their last respects to Molly Lane. Both Clive Linley and Vernon Halliday had been Molly's lovers in the days before they reached their current eminence — Clive as Britain's most successful modern composer, Vernon as editor of the broadsheet The Judge. But gorgeous, feisty Molly had other lovers too, notably Julian Garmony, the Foreign Secretary, a notorious right-winger poised to be the next prime minister. What happens in the aftermath of her funeral has a profound and shocking effect on all her lovers' lives.
A short read and my first by this author. The story was not at all what I had expected - I think it was described much differently when my bookclub was voting on selections for this year!! Still, I found the story entertaining enough but not something that has affected me profoundly. I did enjoy how the 'revenge' turned out in the ending.
Sending on to halonhakkaaja - a winner in my "50 pounds of me is gone" RABCK drawing. Enjoy!!

I expected something different too, but it was a nice and enjoyable read, and I liked it better than some other McEwans I've read.

I have read two books by McEwan and I'm looking forward to read this one.
I enjoyed the reading but I was quite surprised by the storyline.
At some point, I began to think that the book was mostly about dilemmas: the choices that we have to make and the consequences that those choices have on other people's lifes... but then, the ending kind of blurred this impression. It seemed that the consequences of the main characters' choices ended up falling on themselves...
Thanks for sharing. I will keep the book travelling :)
