I put this book on my wishlist after reading Margaret Atwood's "Alias Grace", the first one of her books I had read. I though Alias Grace was absolutely brilliant although it was not the type of book I would usually read. So I had high expectations for Cat's Eye, especially as I had read some good reviews for it. However it did not meet my expectations. The story centres around Elaine, a painter who returns to the city where she grew up for a retrospective of her art. Whilst there she confronts and comes to terms with her childhood memories. The story flicks between being told by Elaine the adult, and Elaine as she was when she was a child and growing up. I found the parts that the adult Elaine tells a bit dull and thought that her childhood was far more interesting. The book shows the same psychological insight as Alias Grace and this is something that really interested me, however I didnt feel that the story went anywhere. I kept reading because I was expecting a dramatic endng but it didnt happen and I felt let down at the end of the book. I also depressed from reading about the life that Elaine had lived. However, I have not read a bad review about this book, and cant help feeling that Ive missed something.... I hope to take this book to a local bookcrossing meeting so another bookcrosser can enjoy it.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, although I found the parts about the bullying difficult to read and (unkindly) thought Cordelia got what she deserved. I found the present-day Elaine rather uninteresting compared to the childhood Elaine.
