Attempt Number Two

Bookray Guidelines:
I try to be flexible, but these are a few general guidelines to go by:
1.) When you receive the book, please journal that you've received it and then journal again once you've read it to tell everyone what you thought. Finally, journal again (or update your previous entry) once you've sent the book to the next person in the ray.
2.) Before sending the book to the next person, be sure to check the list in case I've needed to make adjustments to the order.
3.) Please keep the book no longer than 4 or 5 weeks before sending it on to the next person.
4.) The last person on the bookray should release the book in some Bookcrossing manner--wild release, controlled release, continuing the bookray, whatever.

Participants:
1.)
MollyGrue (US
2.) GrannyAnn (US/Canada)
3.) Everett-Reader (US)
4.) Aisling78 (US/Canada)
5.) Mamikaem (Int'l)

This arrived safe and sound yesterday. I was just getting a handle on my rings and rays. :) I'm glad this one is a thin one. I see I'm the last person. Whew! Although I will keep the book moving. Thank you!

This book was certainly thought provoking. I loved the details of the story, the descriptions. I did not particularly like the characters of Cot or Coote. I have a hard time believing that someone could sit down and dictate their memories in order and with such clarity. I've looked at past journal entries and also wished that Coote had changed at least a little bit.

It was interesting to read about this history. I was aware of the fact that not all slaves were from Africa, but not to this detail. It is stunning what we humans can inflict on each other.

I will be sending this book out again as a ray. I already have names, I just have to organize it, so hopefully next week. Thank you for sharing!

Rules: Not many. Please journal the book's arrival and departure. And please keep it moving by keeping it no longer than 4 weeks. The last person is free to release the book as they wish.

Arrived this morning, this is currently ring 9, so guess what I'll be doing over the Christmas break. A quick peek at the first few pages was a mistake,as I now have to be controlled until I get to this one on the pile! Should be on the move though within the month.

A fascinating account on this period of history. Like previous readers I am also blown away by the anguish we impose on others. I hadn't known the issue of Irish Slaves in the US.It was very thought provoking and I agree that the clarity in which the memories are recorded is incrediable.

Sorry for keeping over the month. The ring pile simply keeps growing!I have Annodyne's address, so this will be in the post on Monday 21st January.

With me now. Thanks to Anglersrest for posting. It must be Bookring season as most of mine seem to have all come in together! I'm glad to see that it is a nice slim volume because I have well over 1,000 pages to get through before I can get to this. (Shesh, what am I am doing online when I should be reading??)

One of the joys of reading is to feel drawn back into a different place and time, and Kate McCafferty succeeds in transporting her reader back to 17th century Barbados. The book is full of fascinating detail about a period in the past that most of us had little idea of.

I think though that the author was less than subtle about the point she was trying to make - that of the connection between Cot, a slave, and Coote, as much a victim of his environment and circumstances as she is. I'm sure the reader would "get it" without all the heavily drawn-in arrows pointing that way!

I have AceofHearts address, and should be posting to her either today or tomorrow.

Updated 15/2/07 - posted to AceofHearts today.

I am amazed by the story of Cot. I knew about indentured servants but never knew how shamefully they were treated. I was surprised at the lengths Cot and Coote went to further their own ends. Both of them were caught up 'in the system'. Man's cruelty to man is quite overwhelming

I just got this in yesterday's mail and am so happy to get the opportunity to give it a read. :) Thanks, lauraloo29!

Luckily, I just finished a book this morning. Since I'll be going on a verrrry long bus/car trip soon, this will be a lifesaver!

Journal Entry 15 by cheli-garza from Dallas, Texas USA on Monday, April 2, 2007
This was a bit of a lifesafer on that long trip. Imagine, I took a 17-hour car trip to Mexico with my family, then returned by bus (24 hours). After a week at home, I turned around and took that same bus back (this time only 19 hours) so my husband wouldn't have to drive home alone (another 16 hours). Wow.

Anyhow, I really enjoyed the story, but found it to move a bit slow after she got to Glebe. The ending was terrific. This makes me wonder if Ms. McCafferty is going to right a sequel, a la Isabelle Allende. Wouldn't that be nice?

Going to CdnBlueRose in tomorrow's mail.
