This book started my love of vampire novels. It was a favorite of mine when I was in junior high school and I was feeling reminiscent the other day when I saw it in the bookstore, so I decided to buy it and re-read it. Roughly a decade after the first time I read it, it was still enjoyable.

Hmmm... after reading Blood and Chocolate, I was expecting this one to be almost as good, but unfortunately, it didn't live up to those expectations. There were times I found it a bit tedious, if only because there was less action than I usually like. But that's definitely a personal preference as I'm not one for the more introspective novels. Okay, now I'm not saying this was an introspective novel, just that it was more so than Blood and Chocolate. It seemed that at times the author was trying to get an important life lesson across to her teen readers, which is kind of where I was going with that comment.

Anyway, now that I got that out of the way, this book did have it's good points as well. The author was able to evoke a good deal of sympathy in me for Zoe's character and her situation. And her reaching out to the Vampire when she felt like she had no one else to turn to was touching. It was even kind of sad at the end...

This should be heading off to yvensong by next week after I hear back from her.

UPDATE 04-MAR-2007: This is all labeled and packaged up and waiting for Monday's mail pickup. Mailed to yvensong in Reno, NV on 05-Mar-2007 via First Class Mail.

This really WAS a quick read! On the whole, I really enjoyed the book, I found the ending a little too pat for my taste, but Klause's writing style was succinct and entertaining. I liked the dynamic between Zoe and Simon. Their relationship was touching and a bit sad as they each reached out to each other.

I have rowenne's address and will get this out to her as soon as I can make it to the post office.

Update March 18, 2007 - This was dropped in the mail today, first class

Such a sad book. I recently dealt with a bit too similar of a situation in my own family. The writing itself was enthralling, and the message was beautiful. It may be 2 weeks before I can mail it off. I hope that is ok.

Aargh~ I thought I mailed this off, but just found it in my bookpile. It will go asap. Sorry for the wait!
