Picked up second hand - thought it was a good way to sample this author.

Very well written well crafted plot...good enough that I plan to read another by Ms. Brown - probably one of her mysteries... but I'm shocked that the author says in the intro this story is one of her all time favorties...my question would be *why* (spoiler alert)

The opening scene of the book grabs you - it is so well done and I thought it set a fantastic tone for what was to come. What followed was not at all what I expected. The biggest obstacle was that I just couldn't buy into the love story part of it. Hawk is not a nice person - violent, cruel and verbally abusive...he takes every opportunity to humiliate, degrade and break Randy's spirit...oh but he's so gorgeous Randy just can't help but fall for him? Pah!... Is it just me? Is this a standard romance plot theme? Because I really don't get it...at all. What's to like about someone who threatens you and your child, physically hurts you, pushes you around, humiliates you...This guy bullies Randy into complying by threatening to seperate her from her kid, he tells her he hates her, and her culture and her skin color...but oh...his eyes, oh, the heat, kiss me! Pa-leese. IMO Randy has Stockholm Syndrome and a weakness for abusive relationships (check out her ex-husband). And again, to try to portray Hawk as believably "changing" from a brute into a soft gentle attentive guy??? It just didn't wash and was too convenient. Maybe Randy took a blow to the head early on in the story and the rest was her fantasy or a dream? Maybe this is true fiction and not meant to be reality based? I really don't get it.

Ms Brown can write and create great plot...people rave about her mysteries so I'm willing to try another book and see if this romance is a one-off lunacy or a theme.
