Joyce Carol Oates has written tons of books, and you can never be sure exactly what you're going to get with her. Some of them I've really liked, some have left me cold, some have been disturbing, and some I've just had no interest in at all. This was one I really liked (amd so did Oprah) - a good olf-fashioned family saga, with good detail and true characters.
