Set in the 1930s at the Cold Mountain Penitentiary's death-row facility, The Green Mile is the riveting and tragic story of John Coffey, a giant, preternaturally gentle inmate condemned to death for the rape and murder of twin nine-year-old girls. It is a story narrated years later by Paul Edgecomb, the ward superintendent compelled to help every prisoner spend his last days peacefully and every man walk the green mile to execution with his humanity intact.

Edgecomb has sent seventy-eight inmates to their date with "old sparky," but he's never encountered one like Coffey -- a man who wants to die, yet has the power to heal. And in this place of ultimate retribution, Edgecomb discovers the terrible truth about Coffey's gift, a truth that challenges his most cherished beliefs -- and ours.

This was a pretty good read, there was saddness in a lot of parts and some almost put me to tears. I'm probably going to watch the movie one of these days.

Wow wow wow!! Getting home after a 12 hour day (including commute) and feeling pretty weary, I was surprised to find a mystery parcel waiting for me. I was expecting some books, but nothing from Canada. Hmmmm..... Opening it up to find this and a wishlist book put a massive smile on my face!

Thank you DarkPunkAngel!! Yey for BookCrossing and wonderful BookCrossers!

What a wonderful read. I haven't seen the film, despite hearing that it was excellent, so the key bits of the book were a surprise. A magical story, King expertly reveals what went on through Edgecombe's present-day telling, with plently of suspense and intrigue along the way. I was moved to tears in a couple of places and would recommend this to anyone, whether they have seen the film or not.

One of King's better books. A touch of the supernatural, but generally about the people and their interactions. After reading the Dark Tower series, I was looking for references to his other stories, but failed to spot any. I'd definitely recommend it.

reserved for the plans of bigcurlyloz
