Caverns of Socrates

Not one of McKiernan's better books. It was ok. It borrowed heavily from Tolkien in spots, but the virtual reality idea was pretty good. Inserting yourself into a game to play (kind of like an online version of D&D). It still a good read.

This was the first McKiernan I'd ever read - and while his writing style didn't blow me out of the water, the idea for this book was fantastic! Much better than Greeley's "God Game" (which is the first parallel that comes to mind), worked really well. I did feel it lacked somewhat in dramatic tension - the "oh no!" points were a bit flat, to my mind. And not really enough action, too much "philosophising". Bring on the action! This book does make me want to read more of this author, though, and that's a plus!
