The Back of the Book

In the big old house overlooking the sea, five small children listened as their mother read them a story. Theirs was an idyllic childhood, as they played on the beach and in the gardens and woods, before the war - and other tragedies - disrupted their lives. Now, many years later, Nest and Mina still live at Ottercombe, their beautiful childood home, surrounded by their dogs and the beauty of the Devon countryside, thrilled by the occasional visits of their nephew and especially beloved niece.

But whent heir sister Georgie, now somewhat frail and forgetful, comes to stay at Ottercombe, memories of their past start to revist them. As a child, Georgie claimed to know all their secrets - secrets that she now wants to share ...

Arrived safely, thankyou laura0141. I am first so feel very privileged! I am looking forward to reading as I have read other titles by Marcia Willett and always enjoyed them. I have one bookring ahead of this title which I am just starting so should be able to read this sometime next week.

Journal Entry 6 by LindyLouMac from Tywyn, Wales United Kingdom on Tuesday, October 3, 2006
A lovely gentle absorbing read I became throughly immersed in the lives of everyone at 'Ottercombe.' I have been reading Marica Willett's novels since 1995 and always enjoy them. Before coming to live in Italy I was always up to date with her latest novel and am now trying to catch up with missed titles. I was therefore delighted to be able to sign up for this Bookring for The Children's Hour 2003. My only gripe about the story was that, for my liking there was too much detail about the canine characters, sometimes over a page at a stretch.
I already have an address for Anglersrest and once I have confirmed she is still interested I will post it to her.

Journal Entry 9 by AnglersRest from Teignmouth, Devon United Kingdom on Wednesday, November 8, 2006
This is the first Marcia Willet's I have read. A gentle story and enjoyable book, although I do agree with LindyLouMac too much canine detail!

I have PM'ed dogsapples and as soon as I have an address the book will be in the post.

Journal Entry 10 by AnglersRest from Teignmouth, Devon United Kingdom on Friday, November 10, 2006
I now have dogsapples address, so in the post Monday 13th Nov. Enjoy!

Journal Entry 11 by dogsapples from Kirkby Stephen, Cumbria United Kingdom on Wednesday, November 15, 2006
Arrived today, many thanks Anglersrest. One Sue Grafton to finish (which won't take long) then I'll be starting it.

Journal Entry 12 by dogsapples from Kirkby Stephen, Cumbria United Kingdom on Monday, November 20, 2006
This was a bit wishywashy for me, or perhaps it would be kinder to call it a "gentle" read, as someone else did. I liked the doggy bits best - but then I would!

Thank you for sharing this book laura0141, I'll be passing it onto wyjane as soon as I have her address.

Journal Entry 13 by wyjane from Radford Semele, Warwickshire United Kingdom on Monday, November 27, 2006
This arrived just as I was leaving for a weekend away, involving 3 hrs on trains each way so ... I've finished before I even had ime to journal its arrival! Like dogsapples I found it a bit lightweight, and I'm afraid the ending was too predictable and neat for my liking. Also I find the habit of putting a chapter of another book at the end rather irritating, a bit like every TV programme having a preview of the next episode. Smacks of insecurity. All that said, I did enjoy the book, though I don't think I'll be looking out for more Marcia Willetts.

Icila too busy for this at the moment but would like to be moved lower down the list.
Have pm-ed azuki to send it on its way

Journal Entry 15 by wyjane from Radford Semele, Warwickshire United Kingdom on Thursday, November 30, 2006

Journal Entry 16 by wingAzukiwing from Miami, Florida USA on Tuesday, January 9, 2007
Well, it didn't arrive until after the new year but arrived safely it did. Thanks wyjane for mailing it and laura0141 for sharing it.

I have gone over 2 weeks without any bookrings (while, a month ago, I was up to 6 - crazy!) and yesterday I received two. I hope this is not the start of an avalanche!

Journal Entry 17 by wingAzukiwing from Miami, Florida USA on Friday, January 26, 2007
I didn't like the story too much in the beginning, though I kind of like the dreamy mood of the childhood flashbacks. Not that it's bad story - it just didn't pull me in. But then as one secret revealed after another the story drew me in and by the end I quite enjoyed it.

Will be mailing to caligula03 next week.

Book is here. Thanks.

Journal Entry 19 by caligula03 from Hayward, California USA on Wednesday, February 21, 2007
I suffered through to page 100 and had to stop. There are too many characters, too much schmaltz and too much mundane detail. Nothing seems to happen except for the dogs getting fed, the cats being cats, characters talking about other characters with little or no explanation of who is who or why I as the reader should care about any of these people. I did skip to the last couple of chapters and of course things wrap up perfectly and everything is happy-happy-joy-joy but frankly I don't care enough to find out why everything goes from more or less okay to completely perfect.

This is the first Marcia Willet's I have read too. I loved being in Ottercombe in a house full of chidren's memories but i was at bay with the dogs' names and lives. The story was too predictable but enjoyable.

I Pm RubyBlueLady. On it's way to her.

Journal Entry 23 by RubyBlueLady from Avebury, Wiltshire United Kingdom on Wednesday, April 25, 2007
This arrived safely today, will read it in the next few days.

Journal Entry 24 by RubyBlueLady from Avebury, Wiltshire United Kingdom on Monday, April 30, 2007
An engaging and enjoyable book, I loved the way the family secrets just kept on coming. I too really liked all the doggy bits, it made me look at my own dogs in a different light LOL.

Two gripes, enough with the po po po-ing! and a novel published in 2003 shouldn't in my view still be using the outmoded term 'confined to a wheelchair'. I use a wheelchair, so therefore I am a wheelchair user, I'm just glad the even ghastlier term 'wheelchair bound' didn't appear.

Thanks for sharing this book, I've enjoyed reading it in the sunshine of this warm April.
