I began reading the first of this George Felse series as I quite like Brother Cadfael (same author), but I found they really weren't as catchy as Cadfael - maybe the historical period doesn't do it for me like the middle ages does!

I imagine a hardcore Agatha fan might enjoy these somewhat more...

Sending to DrCris in Victoria to see what they think!

Got this as part of a relay. Thanks jennymidget. Since I accepted this book, I have looked at some reviews and stuff and am looking forward to it more than I was. May take me a while to read it, though.

I am now 2/3 of the way through this book. For about the first 100 pages I was a bit bored, and about to give it up, but then I got sucked in. I love the interplay between George Felse and his son, although it is a little predictable in outcome. I picked the ending of both novels, but that didn't make me not enjoy them. I am really keen to read the final one, but I am about to go on holidays. That means I have swapped to books that it is ok to leave there if I finish them while away. This one is promised to another bookcrosser, so I will have to wait and read the final installment when I get back.

Finished! I loved the last story. Better than the first two, or maybe just because I was returning to it after a break. There is a bit of "good old chap" english style, but I really enjoyed it anyway. I will be looking for the next one in the series.

I've just read Fallen into the Pit (1951) which I enjoyed quite well. It reminded me a bit of Foyle's War. The killer was particularly nasty as he upset the whole village & would have been perfectly happy to allow another villager to take the fall. It did get a bit philosophical in parts & I don't think it a great introduction to George Felse as it was mostly about Dominic, his son, but I expect the episodes will improve as they continue.

This is the first in the George Felse series, begun about 25 years before her Cadfaels, and Edith Pargeter's first novel writing as Ellis Peters, although she had quite a few published before this under her own name.

cover blurb:
In the aftermath of the war, the murder of a Nazi land-worker in an English village presents a hatful of potential suspects. Much to Felse's chagrin his son Dominic resolves to help him find the murderer - but when another tragedy occurs a clue to the killer's identity proves to be a dangerous piece of knowledge...

Just finished Death and the Joyful Woman (1961). I quite enjoyed it but I do hope they're not all going to have Dominic sticking himself in the way all the time - I felt like smacking him when he blurted out the real nature of the murdered man's injuries to Kitty; I had to remind myself he was sixteen years old. Do people really admit to murders they didn't commit just to protect someone they love? Even when that someone doesn't love them back? Ah well, it all worked out in the end, although so far I haven't seen George Felse do any police work, only chase around after his son.

cover blurb:
A brutal murder, followed by an appraisal of suspects - Detective George Felse makes another arrest... But to Dominic Felse, smitten by the velvet blow of first love, Kitty Norris represents everything that is admirable in life. And his certainty of her innocence drives him to take an alternative line of action from his father, with unexpected consequences.

I enjoyed A Nice Derangement of Epitaphs (1965) more than the other two tales, also. I think it felt more real, and wasn't so dark and emotional as the others. The characters were easy to like, and it made me want to go on a summer holiday to Cornwall - not much chance of that! Pages 693/4 have been torn, or maybe chewed by a puppy, but not enough to interfere with the story.

cover blurb:
George Felse, now a Detective Inspector, abandons his family holiday to investigate the discovery of a corpse. A body in a graveyard may not be unusual, but when the grave is hundreds of years old and the body distinctly modern, Felse suspects foul play and uncovers a bloody history of violence...
