Ooh, this is a good book!
From the back:
"Based on a real murder at the turn of the century, this outstanding debut novel is a powerful and moving coming-of-age book. Mattie is torn between her familial responsibilities, her desire to be a writer, and the excitement of a first romance. Her dilemmas and choices are quietly reflected in the life of a young woman found drowned in a lake, a woman that Mattie only gets to know thourgh reading her letters."
An engaging story that winds itself into all your thoughts with its quiet descriptions, excellent characterisation and interesting plot. Despite being a good deal older and over a century apart I identified with Mattie and her longing for a different life. I thought the way in which real and fictional were married and the similarities between the life of Grace and Mattie were gently revealed was clever and the ending just perfect.

Well I finally got round to reading this :o)
I thought it was a lovely book, very well written with likeable characters. I did find it jumped backwards and forwards a bit which was confusing, but a very enjoyable story - wouldn't agree with the quote on the front though!! If George Clooney walked in whilst I was reading this, I think the book would have been put down ;o)

WILD RELEASE NOTES:
I have had this book for too long so it is time to share it. Taking to the bookcrossing meeting tonight.
Picked at Chelmsford book crossing meet and I thought it was excellent. You want to find out what the talented Mattie will choose do with her life, and how she will deal with the strong pulls of family. It could go either way, and how does it all interweave the death of a young visitor to the hotel where she works? Set in upstate New York near the lakes between Canada and the USA somewhere around 1900.
Passing this good read on now
