I saw this book while browsing in Ottakers in Inverness and purchased it because I enjoyed 'Life of Pi' by the same author a few months ago prior to joining BookCrossing. This is the one hundredth book I have now registered. Added to my growing 'to be read' pile.

I just had to bring this book to the top of the 'to be read' pile. Four very different stories, two of which are in an unusual style. They never quite reach the amazing heights of 'Life of Pi' but still a very good read.

Thank you, Ardachy, the book was waiting for me when I came back from a long weekend. I have only heard good things about Life of Pi and am looking forward to reading this one. First it goes to Mt TBR though.

Journal Entry 5 by wingkihaanwing from Laihia, Pohjanmaa / Österbotten Finland on Tuesday, April 24, 2007
I just finished reading the book. This was the first Yann Martel book I've read and I liked his style. The first two stories were my favourites, the last ones got a bit strange although they still were enjoyable. What can I say, the book was quickly read and based on this first Martel experience, I'm looking forward to reading Life of Pi that I already have in my TBRs.

Thank you, Ardachy, for giving me a chance to read this book. :o) I will release it in the future...

A very nice book. Yann Martels style of writing is impressive. Especially "Manners of Dying" which is quite depressive.

Sent away by post.

The book was waiting for me when arriving home on monday... I really like those kind of welcomes. Going to read it now!

Later...

this bookring arrived to me in a time of most traveling, so that is why even the sending it on was unfortunetaly delayed. However, with me the book traveled not only to Prague, but also to Luxembourg, Potsdam and Ljubljana. I did really enjoy reading it, some sentences even stopped me for longer time. And even better than the stories I remember now the great and inspiring ideas behind them, which fascinated me very much. Playfull book. I was happy to be able to read it, thank you very much for this bookring!

I traveled on without the book, so my friend sent it on - that´s why it is missing a release note between.

Arrived safely this morning. I should be able to start this pretty soon.

Even though some stories in this book were much better than others, I enjoyed them all. "Life of Pi" is a very good book, but I prefered the topics explored in these stories. Thank you for sharing, Ardachy and kihaan. The book will be sent on as soon as I have franaloe's address.

Released 16 yrs ago (12/15/2007 UTC) at To the next participant in Bookring/Bookray, -- By post or by hand/ in person -- Canada

Arrived at my house today. Sudokugirl, thanks for sending.
I hope to be able to finish this book before I go on holidays, otherwise I'm afraid it'll have to stay in my posession a little longer than one month...

Journal Entry 13 by franaloe from Utrecht, Utrecht Netherlands on Friday, December 28, 2007
Too bad I didn't really like the book. For sure he was not the writer yet he became when writing The Life of Pi. The stories didn't really do anything to me. The last story, the one about the mirror machine was my favorite.

Anyway, thanks for sharing the book. It will be leaving for South Africa today!

Journal Entry 14 by klaradyn from Praha, Praha Czech Republic on Wednesday, January 9, 2008
Arrived yesterday. Thanks for sending on!

I read Life of Pi ages ago and I remember not really liking it, although I can't remember why. These stories, however, were very different. Beautiful! Especially the first story still has me thinking.

Sent on to VeganMedusa earlier today.

Book #1 in guinaveve's Keep Them Moving challenge.

Thanks klaradyn and everyone else! Looking forward to this. :)

I quite liked the first story - the idea of the Roccamatios and that we weren't told much about them, just left to our imagination.
The second story was my favourite by far, the image of the theatre, the way the music was described, and meeting the man behind it all.
Manners of Dying was an interesting idea, but a bit repetitive for me. I kind of felt the style of the last two stories was just filling space, padding the book to make it seem more substantial.
Well, even if I wasn't entirely satisfied, he sure has some interesting ideas.
This will be posted to Jubby on Thursday.

Well, I didn't mind this little book at all. In fact, I liked it a lot more then 'The life of Pi' - which seems to be at odd, when compared to the opinions expressed above.

I read this book in two days, travelling backwards and forwards to work. And it was the perfect travelling companion. Work has been hectic of late, and having these short and easy to read stories to take my mind off things made it bearable.

The first (and titled) story had me a little teary on the train on Wednesday, but it was the second story of John Morton, the composer that I found most moving.

Unfortunately, I told my husband about the story ' Manners about dying', as I knew it would interest him (Kevin Barlow was an Australian drug trafficker who was caught and hanged along with another Australian - Barlow), even though the author had taken a few liberty with details. So, he has nabbed the book and read that story (and he laughed out loud while reading it, and asked me if I found it funny too!!?!), and announced that he's going to read the rest of the book now.

So, will post this book in the next day or two to Shortride.
