This book follows a group of microscopic 'humans', built by humans (presumably us) to survive within the mantle of the star. After being abandoned centuries ago, these microhumans have created their own society, based around the giant city Parz. After a series of 'glitches' that destabilize the mantle's Magfield, causing death and destuction, one 'wilder' microhuman, Dura, must use her ancient knowledge to stop the glitches and return stability.
The microhumans are, truly, bizarre. However after 'wowing' us with the unusualness of their biology and life, the actual plot - a straightforward 'underdogs saving the world' scenario - was pretty mundane. Given the huge differences in their make up (they're made entirely of tin!!), I found it hard to accept that they'd developed such human characteristics and society. It didin't ring true for me.
