The Go-Between

Purchased at the annual Children's Hospital book sale in April. I picked it up in part because I liked the first sentence of the Prologue -
"The past is a foreign country: they do things differently there."
"The past is a foreign country: they do things differently there."
12 year old Leo Colton is invited to spend the summer of 1900 at the home of a schoolmate, Brandham Hall, the home of the wealthy Maudsley family. When his friend becomes ill, the innocent and naive Leo, very much an outsider, begins to carry messages between Marian, the daughter of the household, and her lover, a local farmer. The outcome is inevitably tragic.
The story is told by the 60 year old Leo beginning with his memories of the optimism he felt about the turn of the century. The events of that summer as well as the disillusionments of the new century have had a devastating impact on his life.
Excellent novel, well-written, I enjoyed it very much.
