In THE POSSESSED, Stavrogin and Verhovensky dabble in radical politics - with tragic results for an entire town as fanaticism brings robbery, arson, and murder. As for Stavrogin, his political passion is more of a possession by demons that makes his destroy others as well as himself. This rich story mirrors the turmoil of nineteenth-century Russia as Dostoyevsky denounces both nihilists and revolutionaries: "Dostoyevsky wrote of the unconscicious as if it were conscious; that is in reality the reason why his characters seem 'pathological' while they are only visualized more clearly than any other figures in imaginative literature." - Edwin Muir
