Amazon Synopsis
In one of the most acclaimed and strange novels of recent years, Kazuo Ishiguro imagines the lives of a group of students growing up in a darkly skewered version of contemporary England. Narrated by Kathy, now 31, "Never Let Me Go" hauntingly dramatises her attempts to come to terms with her childhood at the seemingly idyllic Hailsham School, and with the fate that has always awaited her and her closest friends in the wider world. A story of love, friendship and memory, "Never Let Me Go" is charged throughout with a sense of the fragility of life.

A great read, very disturbing discussion on cloning - do clones have souls?

Received today - thanks very much :-)
I seem to be in a minority when it comes to this book - it didn't really grab me at all.

On its way to Australia.
tbr - arrived today! Thank you for including me, I am looking forward to getting to it shortly. :)
Well, 'strange' is a word I would use to descrie this novel...it intrigued me even though it annoyed me at different points because it did take me a while to grasp what was going on and to fully understand the concept. I like my books to grab me straight away, this novel sort of snuck up on me and I am impressed by the craftsmanship in presenting layer after layer of meaning and plot.
I am pleased to have been included in the ring, and am pleased I was reading outside of my comfort area. Will be off to Tohwei tomorrow. xox

The guard at the gate passed it to me this morning as I walked in, along with two other books sent by wendyv. Thanks Wendy! Oh and thanks for the tea too! Green tea's my favourite :)
Will get started soonest possible (tonite, hopefully).

Finished it at the weekend. I loved it, it kept me reading on right from the start and I liked how the story unfolded. I really admire how Ishiguro explored the emotional fragility set against a backdrop of an ethically sensitive theme.
Am now waiting for carelaisa's address to send it off. Have PM'd her.

Well, it was quite a surprise when this book arrived a few days ago - but now I know what happened: tohweiee wanted to send me a different book but it got mixed up with Never Let Me Go in the mail because for some reason they repackage the books to make it cheaper for her.
Well, so instead of being in Canada, it's now in Germany. Since I hadn't started another book at the time and since I had wanted to read some of Ishiguro's for a long time, I started reading it right when I got it. During the last few days it travelled to the South of Germany with me and I'm about halfway through. I'll finish it and then send it to carelaisa.

I finished it when I was on a short trip to Dresden and I have already pm'ed carelaisa for her address. I like the fact that it's going to Québec next, as I used to live there for a while.
I can definitely recommend this book as a novel less about cloning than about friendship, family, and childhood. Disturbing is the right word for it, yes, but not at all in a way a thriller or some gross account of a murder would be. I hope this book travels on and finds more readers.

The book is now - finally ;) - on its way to Canada; to be precise, to Québec. I'm very happy about sending a book there because I have come to love that place during a longish stay there. Bon voyage!
Finally got it today... after the package in which the book was got withhold a little while at the customs. But everything is in order and the book has reached its final destination for now.
Oedde, thanks for everything that came along with the book :)
I will read it in the upcoming weeks and then decide what to do with the book...

Finally read it and finished a few days ago but my thoughts about it just came today... Overall, it’s a story that’s not necessary the happiest one; it tells about friendship, love and souvenirs that these kids had and lived through. There’s also a light shed on life and its fragility, that we mustn’t take it for granted. I quite liked though, at some moments, I felt it was a bit too long or there wasn’t any real link with the actual story, but it’s a book that’s worth to be read. I’m curious to see the movie that was made based on this book.
Since I'm the last reader for now on this ray, I'm making the book available... but I might start another ray with in the upcoming weeks...

And the book arrived in Belgium safe and sound. Thanks for sending it to me, carelaisa. I've been reading through the JE's and I'm getting really interested in the book. Big kisses for sending me such a wonderful choice!!

I'm not exactly a monster fan of this book. The ending did get to me (especially the part where they talk to Miss Emily). However the rest of the book was difficult for me to get into. It was easy enough to read, but I guess I don't have much patience for other peoples social problems. Because in my view that was what most of this book was about, the small problems of small children that have been belittled too much.
Sounds a bit harsh perhaps, I know. But I just couldn't get into it that much. Thanks for sending it to me anyway, carelaisa. I was very curious about it and now I know for certain!

received the book today. thanks so much moriquen!
I find the story of the book really sad. What a life! To know that you exist for one reason and one reason alone!
I think it made a difference that I had talked with a friend about the book before I read it. So I already knew what the deal was with these people. If I hadn't known I probably would have been quite confused to begin with. The book is well written, though in the end I wondered how come none of the characters tried to break out. Didn't it occur to any of them to just refuse what was planned for them? I find that a bit unrealistic. But then, the whole book is unrealistic. Anyway, not a bad book.

Thank you very much for sending me this wishlist book as well as another wishlist - White Tiger.
If I hadn't seen the movie first I wouldn't have gotten what was so special about the students at Hailsham. As with his other books I found this difficult to read (can't quite explain why).
Passed on to Billbooks.
