4 characters, 4 ages, 4 different years & 4 different outlooks but all linked and revolving around a high school massacre.
Douglas Coupland has never been the type of author to settle for a linear narrative and it would never work with what he's trying to do here. I don't normally pay much credance to the blurb on the back, but I think this one has got it pretty much spot on. Each of the characters are looking for meaning and also resolution either in their lives, in their beliefs or simply in those around them. It touches on a number of themes such as early death, the impact on an early death on surrounding lives, organised religion, the impact of organised religion on families, social groups and also the way they interact. Grief and looking back are constant themes in this book, but as you move through the looking back starts to shift through a painful process to start looking forward.
I'm not going to do much credit to the book here, all I can recommend is that you read it and decide for yourself.
