...a great charity shop find to add to my Coupland 'back catalogue' to read :)

A huge and deserved 9 *'s - Coupland has excelled himself, although i'm acknowledging the sum-of-his-works. This is a Hiaasen-esque thriller and chaotic romp through the life and times of the Drummond family, shady goings-on in Florida, with a backdrop of the impending space flight of Sarah [Drummond]. Despite. or because of(?), a birth deformity she is the only high achiever in this dysfunctional Canadian family; Wade the golden wayward son, Bryan handsome but dim, pater Ted, arch-philanderer and loser, and steady matriarch Janet...who begins and ends this tale. As Wade says to his crooked friend Norm, 'You should see my family. Every single one of us is psychotic.' I won't try and summarise the mad plot, except to say I thought the letter premise a bit too silly, but loved the final sentiments and found the healing and reconciliations were very touching. Coupland goes from strength to strength, his meaty plots (when he's not being too geeky and/or introspective), insights (ditto) and sublime dialogue are a joy.
