Robert Cope Harland ended his career as a British spy in an Austrian hospital, after being tortured and beaten during the Velvet Revolution in Prague. He found new life working with the Red Cross and then the UN. Twelve years later, Harland's plane, carrying a number of UN officials, crashes in mysterious circumstances on its approach to La Guardia airport, New York. Harland regains consciousness, still strapped in his seat and face down in freezing mud, to find that he is the sole survivor. Was it sabotage and, if so, was Harland the target or someone else? And what has the crash got to do with the broadcast of coded signals by certain European radio stations? The authorities on both sides of the Atlantic are urgently seeking answers.
