Synopsis
Cavalier and Roundhead battle it out in the turbulent setting of the English Civil war and provide the background for this classic tale of four orphans as they face adversity, survival in the forest, reconciliation and eventual forgiveness.

Picked up at the UnConvention last weekend. I'm going to read this fairly soon with a view to sending it to my nephew and niece afterwards.

I am told this is one of the classics of children's literature and the basis of a beautiful film. However, it is probably somewhat slow-moving and cosy for today's young readers and is definitely not for vegetarians! To be honest I found it a bit of a slog to get through and have changed my mind about passing it onto my nephew and neice. It's a shame that such a good plot is narrated in such a turgid and pedestrian fashion, but it was published in 1847 so I can't be too harsh on that score.
