I remember in elementary school when the class would go to "library class", this is one of the books the librarian read to us... as we were working on other things. So I think she was reading to us for her own enjoyment rather than ours, as we were working on our busy work. (I can't imagine seven year olds wrapping their head around this anyway.) So it was nice to revisit this one.

Thank you so much for this one, I was pleasantly suprised to see it. Another book I recall loving years ago, and now have the joy of re-reading.

I definatly enjoyed reading this one a second time around. I find it quite hard to enjoy books in a school setting where they are forcing you read like or not, and when I first read this one I was to young to fully appericate the theme of a dystopian socity, a theme I have come to enjoy ever since reading "Brave New World."

This time I found this one very hard to put down and definatly something I found myself reflecting on after I was able to put it aside. It was touching and very well written. I certianly admire how the author was able to write half the book without mentioning a color. I can't do that when I write, I am extremely sensative to color in settings. There isn't a doubt in my mind I would have high taled it from that crappy socity if I was given the gift of what it was like to be an individual.

The only thing I am not to fond of is the end...it's hard to tell if Jonas was dying and thinking of one last memory, or if there really was a house there. I am all for endings that leave the details up to the reader, but this one was simply a bit to vauge in fitting with the rest of the story.

Thanx again for the book! :) Anyone else who wants to read it just give me a message.

OOOOOO!! What a suprise was waited for me today!!
Thank you so much sothisdhampir!!

I was a slightly embittered as I was going home. Things happened, and I had lost my splendour, my high spirits. Sometimes there are difficult, painful moments in the life, even if they can't be called "serious", nevertheless they are serious, make me sad. Today is a this kind of day. I was near to cry about my sorrow, when I opened my mail-box, and dropped out 2 packages. ( Another parcel ).

Your package sothisdhampir came just in time. When I really need, your love arrived me, reached me. Immediately I remembered our story, how I "got" this book. You read my wish, and offered this book to me "just because", and now *Your Gift* gave me a smile, a happy smile, which helped my sorrow to mitigate. Thanks.

Update: 2010.02.28.
I reread this story this time in English. It is still interesting, and I still would like to have a proper end. :) At the first time when I read it, I was shocked at the ceremony of "telling our emotion after dinner". Even if they have "lifeless emotions", the idea is brilliant. This time I loved as how Jonas experienced this things, snow, sunshine, colors, and even the pain. I am so lucky to have choices, can decide although sometimes would be good if someone decides and takes on the responsibility instead of me. Sameness, it is a heavy word. Even me can forget the diverstity of the life around me. This story makes me think that how many things can be in my life which I could experience, they are existed but I do not notice them at all..

This book is listed as a Young Adult book in the Amazon.com, so I dare to send it to my buddy in the scope of the Young Adult Exchange Game :))

Thanks for the YA package, I love the book selection and the little goodies. I read, and absolutely loved this, last year. I'll make sure it goes travelling.

I received this book, along with another book for the Young Adult Book Exchange. Thank you very much katrinat . for sending me two books, a lovely Winnie The Pooh bookmark, a pretty postcard and a pack of two Cadbury's caramel Bunnies, (they were so yummy)! I have read all the reviews on this book, and I'm looking forward to reading it.

Amazon Editorial Review
Jonas's world is perfect. Everything is under control. There is no war or fear of pain. There are no choices. Every person is assigned a role in the community. When Jonas turns 12 he is singled out to receive special training from The Giver. The Giver alone holds the memories of the true pain and pleasure of life. Now, it is time for Jonas to receive the truth. There is no turning back.

Nice little story which draws you in as you read it. As for the ending, which has been mentioned in a couple of journals here, well it was a happy ending whatever it was. I like to think that Jonas was going towards the real world as we know it. I'm glad I had a chance to read this book. I gave it a 7 star rating.

A good read overall but somehow a bit too simple, especially towards the end. But I still enjoyed reading it most of the time.
