Much better than I expected, though it should be read immediately after the preceeding book (Arthur War Lord, BCID 965-4109931) to be enjoyed to its fullest.

A science fiction novel masquerading as fantasy, this novel calls to mind The Illuminatus Trilogy, The DaVinci Code, and several medieval epics I've read. When I finished the novel I realized that, while I hadn't been rooting for the wrong people the whole time, I had been paying attention to the wrong characters. Or first viewpoint character quickly takes second stage as we start to follow a pair of lovers both from the third and first person point of view. While the protagonists are clearly identificable, the antagonists are never clear, and indeed don't make an appearance until the end of the story.

The basic plot follows a major in the British Air Force, sent back in time and inhabiting the mind of Lancelot in the Court of King Arthur as he tracks a renegade terrorist. Of course, in this world Arthur was actually a Roman general of the fifth century and Britain was a wild collection of Jutes, Saxons, Celts, and a myriad of micro-kingdoms and macro-tribes. There is a great deal more sex and drug use than I had expected in the story, though none of it is used for shock or exploitation value.
