Found at the Convention. I have had no luck liking Zadie Smith. I have to decide whether to read or release. It would make a great Xmas Present. Hmmmm

A Surprise for MissOwl

A surprise indeed! Thank you so much, woosang, for a wonderful Christmas present. I do believe this is a home with glue so I'll look after it :)

Just finished White Teeth as part of my slow trek through the 1001 ranges, and book number 5 of 10 of my Set-It-Yourself challenge for this quarter. (I just might squeeze through, this time!) As a modern read after so many C19th and C20th classics, I actually didn't enjoy it as much as I thought it would. The story was entertaining and the colours have a real flair, brilliance and vivacity to them, but I felt that they were ultimately too easily manipulable, caricatured, and not quite believable. There's a certain flavour of postmodern irony in a lot of contemporary literature, I find, that doesn't take anything seriously, or flattens all events to the same level of significance (wartime killing, suicide attempt, fathering a child) - that makes me not care very much about the characters.

Possibly reserved for a book satchel that will be crossing the continent this week.

Thanks heaps Miss-Owl. Heard conflicting reports about this one . . . so now I can see for myself.
And it's another on the 1001 list. ;-)
