'Nu een woordje over Kaas.De meesten onder jullie menen
natuurlijk dat Elsschot nee! die
kaashistorie persoonlijk heeft
meegemaakt. Toch niet. Elsschot
heeft nooit getracht kaas aan de
man te brengen, maar heeft wel z'n
leven lang in publiciteit gedaan.
En om z'n wrok, z'n bittere haat
tegenover die publiciteit uit te
drukken heeft hij kaas genomen.
Elsschot vond het begrip publiciteit
te abstract om erover te schrijven,
maar kaas in de vorm van ons allen
bekende bollen, die men grijpen
kan, die stinken (...) is tenminste
konkreet.'
