from the back cover:

In a memoir hailed for its searing candor and wit, Alice Sebold reveals how her life was utterly transformed when, as an eighteen-year-old college freshman, she was brutally raped and beaten in a park near campus. What propels this chronicle of her recovery is Sebold's indomitable spirit -- as she struggles for understanding ("After telling the hard facts to anyone, from lover to friend, I have changed in their eyes"); as her dazed family and friends sometimes bungle their efforts to provide comfort and support; and as, ultimately, she triumphs, managing through grit and coincidence to help secure her attacker's arrest and conviction. In a narrative by turns disturbing, thrilling, and inspiring, Alice Sebold illuminates the experience of trauma victims even as she imparts wisdom profoundly hard-won: "You save yourself or you remain unsaved."

I thought this would be a very difficult book to read due to the subject matter. Instead I found it to be engaging. Once I picked it up I had a hard time putting it down. I needed to know how someone would survive an ordeal like this. This book was well written and I plan on reading the author's other book, "The Lovely Bones" because of the excellent storytelling skills shown in this book.

I am mailing this book to stacyinthecity today. It is being shipped via USPS and the DC number is

Thanks for sharing the book!

this book arrived a little while ago. I have one bookring book in front of it to read, and then I'll get started on this one. Thank you for the opportunity to read this book!

This was an honest story of one woman's rape and recovery, including the trial.

This is not a fun read. I found myself uncomfortable at times, angry at other times, and even though it is a "good ending" it isn't really a good ending. The rape doesn't go away at the end. She just goes on with her life. While it isn't a fun read, it is a valuable book, and one I'm so glad I read. It was wonderfully written and very honest.

The book is shipping today.

Received the book today, and I will start reading it tomorrow as I like to get the bookrings done and on their way.

I will be sending this book along to MissGrace as soon as I have an address. (RebeccaJames has ask to be skipped at this time)... mailing book 8/22/06.

I found this an interesting read and not something that I would have had the courage to write. So many instances like this treat the victim wrong!

Journal Entry 8 by MissGrace from Anderson, South Carolina USA on Wednesday, August 30, 2006
Received today. I have started reading as soon as I walked in from the mailbox and am having a hard time putting it down (even to journal it's arrival!).
Thanks so much for sharing!

This book was not at all what I expected....although I'm not really sure exactly what it was that I expected. I guess I just assumed that Sebold went on to become a successful novelist that her life turned out wonderful and she lives happily ever after despite this horrible thing that happened to her at the age of 18. I know realize just how naive that thinking is. As stacyinthecity said, the rape just doesn't disappear and then she just goes on with her life. Thanks so much for sharing despescados!

I went to the post office this past Friday and Lucky is on it's way to bluesneak.

This book was so intense that I had to take breaks from reading it due to the realness of the subject matter. I can't imagine having gone through what Alice went through and then being OK psychologically. As it turns out, Alice wasn't as OK as she thought she was, as evidenced by her later drug use and other behaviors. I read the NPR transcript of her conversation with Terry Gross on 'Fresh Air' at the end of the novel and I liked what she had to say about therapeutic writing, that writing can be therapeutic, but that therapeutic writing shouldn't be published. I think I agree with that statement. I'm sure many memoirs are written as a form of therapy, but in Alice's case, her memoir came to be after she reached a point where she was OK. As she stated, reading her journals about how she felt after the rape after all those years was "mind-blowing" and made her realize that she "did OK." I also liked what she had to say about being able to find compassion for the man that raped her, that just because you can't forgive someone for what they've done to you, doesn't mean you can't find compassion for them.

I found her reasons for stopping to write this memoir before finishing 'The Lovely Bones' very interesting and now I can't wait to read it too.

Thank you for sharing this book dospescados! I have PM'd leeann347 for an address and I will pass the book along as soon as I get it.

Update: 11/15/2006
leeann347 has asked to be skipped so I'm going to PM the next reader for an address.

THE 2006 KEEP THEM MOVING CHALLENGE
Release #2

I got no reply from pndfam05 and I really don't want to keep this book any longer than I already have so I am shipping it to valerief today to continue the ray. Enjoy!

Journal Entry 15 by valerief from Queens, New York USA on Sunday, December 17, 2006
Thanks, Bibliocrates! I should get to this next week.

Journal Entry 16 by valerief from Queens, New York USA on Friday, January 5, 2007
This is a very powerful memoir. While matter-of-factly stating the details of her attack and the ensuing trial, it is interesting to see how she copes (or doesn't cope) with the trauma. I recommend reading her first novel "The Lovely Bones" and also the discussion group section at the back of this book to compare how she treats violent crimes and their aftermath. Overall a moving, well-written read.

I PM'd Xeyra three times over three weeks with no response, and redjanet has asked to be removed. This is now going to abrokenstarr; I will mail this weekend.

Journal Entry 17 by abrokenstarr from Reading, Berkshire United Kingdom on Saturday, January 13, 2007
Arrived yesterday, thanks Valerief.

Odd, I've made a promise that I will knock my TBR down, and I've received on average a book every three days since that pledge. Anyway, I currently have two other rings with me, I aim to get to this as soon as possible.

Journal Entry 18 by abrokenstarr from Reading, Berkshire United Kingdom on Wednesday, February 21, 2007
This is Sebold's recount of what happened to her when she was sexually assaulted, and the aftermath of it.

I read The Lovely Bones in the past, and found it touching enough to read this book.

I'm not really sure how to 'review' this book, because of its subject matter and the reality of it, except to say that I did feel it was the reality, uncomfortably at times. Particularly with the ways that she tries to show the outside world that she is still the same person.

Will try to send this on as quickly as possible

Journal Entry 19 by abrokenstarr from Reading, Berkshire United Kingdom on Tuesday, February 27, 2007
I intend to post this on tomorrow.

Journal Entry 20 by Inver from Aberdeen, Scotland United Kingdom on Thursday, March 1, 2007
Arrived today. Not sure if this will be an enjoyable book, due to the subject matter but will give it a go. I have two more bookrings to read before this one but will get to it ASAP.

10/3/07 Will still be a few weeks before I get to this one.

Journal Entry 21 by Inver from Aberdeen, Scotland United Kingdom on Friday, April 6, 2007
Had mixed feelings about reading this considering the actual topic but I have to say although very harrowing in parts I found it a compelling read. Sometimes I could barely come to terms with the fact that the story contained an actual factual account of something that had happened to another human being. How she could actually face going back to write about what happened to her is beyond me. What a brave lady Alice is.

Thank you for allowing me to take part in this bookring. Waiting for next address to send it on.

RELEASE NOTES:

Winging its way to Australia (surface mail). Happy travels.

Ahh me, ahh my...what a journey this book has made. It has arrived safely in Australia today. Will start ASAP so I can send it off to the next participant. Thanks for the lovely postcard Inver and thanks to dospescados for sharing.

Journal Entry 24 by rem_OIN-713485 on Thursday, July 5, 2007
Definitely a harrowing read and one that was quite difficult in places. All I can say is I admire Alice's strength and endurance, because I felt her family was a bit dysfunctional during her time of need. Am not sure if I would actually recommend this book to anyone, as it's something that takes courage to read and it is emotionally draining (does that even make sense???). Anyways, thanks so much for sharing dospescados. xx

Will PM Sherlockfan for their addy and post ASAP.

Can't be sure when this book actually arrived in NZ because I've been out of the country. Arrived back to find 5 books being cared for by a good friend who cleared our Post OFfice box during our absence. Luckily I'm not too busy just now so should be able to clear them fairly soon.

I see this is a ray rather than a ring so won't put it top of the list. Dospescados please confirm that this is a ray and you have no plans for it from here. Once I've read it I could perhaps put a message on the BCNZ Yahoo site and see if there are others here in NZ who might like to read it.

Journal Entry 27 by Sherlockfan from Upper Hutt, Wellington Province New Zealand on Thursday, September 20, 2007
While not exactly enjoyable this was certainly a rivetting read. SO pleased to have had the opportunity.
I'm too busy at the moment to set up the ray I'd originally envisaged. Instead I willtake the book with me to the 2007 Australian BC Convention in Melbourne where I am sure it will be eagerly snatched up.

Released 16 yrs ago (10/5/2007 UTC) at Australian Bookcrossing convention 2007 in Melbourne CBD, Victoria Australia

I was not looking forward to reading this book but I did and I actually enjoyed it although a little depressing and sad I was pleased I did as I had read Lucky Bones it gave an insight to the real crime which was all very tragic...I left this book at Perth Airport so I do hope someone has picked it up and will pass it on cheers x
