Edith Hope (a.k.a. romance author Veronica Wilde) has been banished by her friends to a stately hotel in Switzerland. During her stay she befriends some of the other guests, each of whom has his or her own tale. Edith struggles to come to terms with her career and love - the lack, the benefits, and the meaning thereof.
Edith Hope is in disgrace and working out her probation on the shores of Lake Geneva. Friends and family have banished her to seemly Swiss solitude until such times as she recovers her senses. This novel won the Booker Prize in 1985.
This has sat on my bookshelf 1985 waiting TBR. I've picked it up a couple of times but just couldn't get into it. Then when someone expressed an interest in reading it on the Yahoo BCUK forum, I decided it was about time that I dug it out and passed it on.

This very slim paperback was sent to me as a RABCK from a kind bookcrosser. I will send it on to urbanspaceman when I've finished it.
Journal Entry 5 by RubyBlueLady from Avebury, Wiltshire United Kingdom on Tuesday, September 19, 2006
My husband put this book amongst my own books and it disappeared for a good long while. Now I've found it again (and have made a place for books from other bookcrossers) I've read it.
You can see I only gave it 4 out of 10. Not because the book is 'bad' as such, but because I'm a philistine LOL Nothing much happened in it but the author got to show us all the clever underused words she knows. Maybe she she likes making people without vast vocabularies feel small, or maybe I just feel inadequate!
Anyway, I'll pass this on to USM and see if he gets on with it better than I did.

posted on to urbanspaceman, finally!
Sorry to be so long journalling this - I've been off sick for quite a few weeks. Anyway, thanks to RubyBlueLady for it. It will be part of one of my reading list projects:
* Man Booker Prize Winners [1984]
* Man Booker Prize Winners [1984]
Another BC book that has re-emerged after a great many years.
I quite enjoyed its rather mannered style and the possible insights into a certain world that, even in 1985, must have been coming to an end. To me, the story feels as it if really should be set in 1930s, such are the social niceties portrayed.
Will release it soon.
