Great detective story set in 19th century New York.

New York City, 1896. A serial killer is on the loose, gruesomely preying upon cross-dressing boy prostitutes. Police detectives are making no progress solving the ghastly crimes. In fact, someone with power or influence seems to be bent on silencing witnesses and thwarting any investigation. Reform-minded police commissioner Theodore Roosevelt (yes, the same TR who later became president), determined to catch the killer, assembles an unconventional group of investigators headed by "alienist" Dr. Lazlo Kreizler. (In the 19th century, when psychology was in its infancy, the mentally ill were considered "alienated" from themselves and society, and the experts who treated them were known as "alienists.")

Have just finished reading the book. Sorry it took a while to read, but have been pre-occupied with exams. I quite enjoyed the descriptions Carr gives, although some of the murders were quite graphic i thought. A good book!

Journal Entry 6 by perfcangel on Monday, June 12, 2006
I have a couple of bookrays ahead of this one, but will get to it as soon as I can! Thanks.

Good book. I liked the setting. I don't often think about the history of forensic science, so I really enjoyed the discussions of theories that have since been proven or disproven. I also found the psychology discussions interesting. The ending was a little ... weird. Bit of a letdown maybe.

Well-written and suspenseful... I liked the historical aspects that are woven into the story - both the details of New York at that time, and the way an investigation had to be conducted with the methods they had available. After starting the book, I realized I'd listened to this book on tape several years ago! But I remembered liking it pretty well, so went ahead with it; and have now proven to myself that I can grasp a lot more details from reading than from listening. Well-worth a second go-round.

Thanks for sharing!

I really, really liked this book...
Maybe a bit long, as the author wanted to cram into it. (For example, in the final chpaters, when you want to know how they catch the murderer, you are not really that interested in Roosevelt's children...)
Very interesting and well depicted characters, and a great historical setting. A lot of research must have got into it...
Thanks for sharing this, Perryfran!
MinervaBCN has asked to be skipped, so I will find a good destination for this deserving book.
