6 journalers for this copy...
This was one of my 'text books' during my "Crime Writing" course at uni (I majored in journalism and thought it would be cool to do something like this!). I can vaguely remember the book...ahhh uni...makes me wonder how many brain cells I fried. Anyway - this one is on the shelf should someone be interested in it.
Am sending in the baggie to the Australian BookCrossing Convention...

Onto the dizzy heights of Mt TBR with you little book!

I've always enjoyed film noir, though I'm ashamed to say this is the first 'book noir' that I've read. Luckily, I wasn't disappointed by this one - clearly this book is an archetype for the other imitators of Chandler's style.
The plot was complicated, but still maintained my interest, and I often found myself chuckling aloud at Chandler's turn of phrase. The character of Phillip Marlowe was well drawn, as were Chandler's depictions of what have now become 'mystery' stereotypes - the 'hard-boiled' blonde; the smooth gangster; the mysterious butler, etc. etc. I was also amazed that a book published in 1939 was so overt in descriptions of seduction and violence - I know that they HAD these events at that time, I just didn't realise that anyone was WRITING about them.... until Chandler that is!
I rarely have a 'voice' in my head whilst reading books - but throughout this one kept hearing Humphrey Bogart's dulcet tones as the narrator! It added to the pleasure I found in this book.
Thanks for sharing it with me via the Convention, MooMoo1977. I'll make sure this one travels on soon.
Here's looking at you kid!

Read by the other member of the household, who usually enjoys a good mystery, but who unfortunately was not particularly impressed with this one. I gather it was the 'hard-boiled' approach that was not fully appreciated. Oh well, can't win 'em all, as they say.
That doesn't mean I won't appreciate it though, so back onto the groaning TBR stack it goes.

My (and Raymond Chandler's) first Philip Marlowe, and and definitely an interesting read. The plot was a bit messy, taking me longer to read than I expected, as I was determined to remember who everyone was and how and where they all fitted in. Love his spare 'tough' prose and the descriptions, especially the descriptions of people's faces. It reminded me a bit of one of those 'revolving door' type plays, where all the characters keep coming and going and turning up unexpectedly but serendipitously at just the right place and of course at exactly the right moment.
Character wise I liked Philip - he's an interesting mix of things but the bottom line is that the man has integrity. He's also smart and unpredictable, which helps to make him interesting. But the female characters . . . it would be pretty hard to make them any more ditzier!! Rather overblown perhaps - but then that is the 'hardboiled' style I guess. I haven't seen the movie, must look out for it.
Off now to arugh48187 in India.
