RELEASE NOTES:
Oh, I'm so happy this one made it to me. This was on my wishlist. Thanks Cyberkedi!
Amusing, lovely, charming book. I'm so glad I got to read this one. I've got to look for more by this author. He also wrote Bachelor Brothers' Bed and Breakfast and also Bachelor Brothers' Bed and Breakfast Pillow Book, both of which I've read and enjoyed.
This was a delightful, quick read. The only reason I took off points for this, some people might find it difficult to read due to the literary references and the bits of French in it, and the occasional $50 English word. But there's a list of characters at the beginning that helps to keep track of who's who.
This story takes place in Père Lachaise cemetary in Paris, France. Many, many famous people were buried here, including Jim Morrison, Colette, Sarah Bernhardt, Oscar Wilde, and Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas. These people lived during various times, but in this story all have been "translated" into cats that occupy the cemetery. This story is comprised of letters, diary entries, a bit of poetry, and a tiny bit of music and playbills, from the various characters in the story. It takes place during a 2-month time period while many of the cats are enceinte (with kittens). There's no predicting when, and which, kittens will be born special, as new translations of deceased uprights (and this is where the title comes from, since Alice B. Toklas is waiting for her "husband" Gertrude Stein).
More on Gertrude Stein. Be sure to follow the links to read about Père Lachaise Cemetery, Alice B. Toklas, and her famous "Hashisch Fudge."
Père Lachaise Cemetery
And in an interesting bit of BC synchronicity, I recently read "The Keys to Egypt," about Champollion's quest to decipher Egyptian hieroglyphics, and he is also buried at Père Lachaise.
Thanks so much for sending this my way, Cyberkedi. This will soon be going on a long plane flight to a new home.

Wow. What a cool book. :) I like the way the author tells the story in fragments, from the perspective of several of characters. Yes, it helps is you know something about the famous people who are characters in this book but even if you are not, it still is a very entertaining read.
Probably one of the best cat themed novels I have read in ages.

On its way to catsalive. I hope she reads and enjoys this book.
From the Cat Bookbag.

Clever & amusing; occasionally tedious - perhaps because I had little interest in Alice's need for Gertrude. I was glad to see old Morrison get his comeuppance. Poor Tristesse - a life of sadness.
I had meant to visit Pere-Lachaise last time I was in Paris but didn't have time.
I enjoyed Bachelor Brothers' Bed & Breakfast more.
GR reviews.
