The Kite Runner
11 journalers for this copy...
Synopsis:
The Kite Runner follows the story of Amir, the privileged son of a wealthy businessman in Kabul, and Hassan, the son of Amir's father's servant. As children in the relatively stable Afghanistan of the early 1970s, the boys are inseparable. They spend idyllic days running kites and telling stories of mystical places and powerful warriors until an unspeakable event changes the nature of their relationship forever, and eventually cements their bond in ways neither boy could have ever predicted. Even after Amir and his father flee to America, Amir remains haunted by his cowardly actions and disloyalty. In part, it is these demons and the sometimes impossible quest for forgiveness that bring him back to his war-torn native land after it comes under Taliban rule. ("...I wondered if that was how forgiveness budded, not with the fanfare of epiphany, but with pain gathering its things, packing up, and slipping away unannounced in the middle of the night.")

This arrived in the post today. Thanks michyj for offering this bookring :) The card and labels are gorgeous! I look forward to reading this as soon as I polish off an Amy Tan novel.
I actually cried whilst reading this book. That may not be strange to some people but it usually takes a fair bit to make me burst into tears whilst reading. By the last page (when I read one particular line - and you will know which one after reading the book too)I was sobbing out loud - lucky I was reading it in the comfort of my loungeroom :)
This is an unusually eloquent story about the fragile relationship between fathers and sons, humans and their gods, men and their countries. Loyalty and blood are the ties that bind their stories into one of the most lyrical, moving and heartwrenching books I have had the pleasure of reading.
One of my favourite parts of the book is towards the end on page 327 where Amir discovers that in America you do not reveal the end of a movie...it is an incredibly powerful piece of writing.
I have messaged LizzieM who is next in line.
Posted off to LizzieM this morning. Enjoy :)

RELEASE NOTES:
Passing this book on to the next reader on the bookring, at the monthly meet-up of the Brisbane BookWorms reading group (my first time with the group, so I hope they're gentle with me!)
This one came to me as part of a book ring - really looking forward to reading it!
Thanks for this. I look forward to reading it. I suspect Jess may like to read it too.
Jess read this first and loved it! I am currently a third of the way through and thoroughly enjoying it.
Sorry for taking so long to read this book! I had so many texts to read for school that it took me nearly 2 months to get through it! However, I really enjoyed the book; a truly great tale. I shall be recommending this as a senior text at my school, we are forever searching for new International authors. Thanks so much for allowing us to be part of your ring. I shall pass it on to the next participant ASAP.
Arrived today - thanks magicjessnrach & michyj. I have a few bookrings ahead of this one but should bet it done within a reasonable time, fingers crossed.
Finally finished this wonderful book. A great novel, especially considering it was the first novel for this author. Through most of the book I really didn't like Amir - he was spineless, shallow and selfish and I just wanted to shake him to awaken his conscience (even though he did try to right his wrongs in the end). As for revealing the end of a movie.... I always planned to watch 'The Magnificent Seven', but now I don't have to...lol.
Thanks Michyj for including me in this bookring. On it's way to DrCris.

RELEASE NOTES:
On it's way to DrCris to continue this bookring :o)
Arrived last week. Sorry, this is the first chance I have had to journal it. I have two bookrings on the go, and they are both halfway through (grn!) so this shouldn't have to wait too long!
Wow. Finished this tonight. Pretty amazing. In fact, I was exhausted and unwell and came home from work early to nap, and had to stay awake to read the last 10 pages! I almost threw this book into the corner at one stage (not literally - I look after bookring books!). I was just so angry at Amir for his general behaviour. I am glad I stuck with it, as I am not angry with him now. I am not sure how I feel about a book where I felt angry with the main character for 3/4 of the plotline. Can I really say I enjoyed it? I certainly am glad I read it, though.
I will pass this on to livrecache as soon I get her OK. I just sent her my last bookring, so I guess she might be backed up.
Thanks DrCris: this book arrived today. Thanks for sharing Michyj. Cris is right -- I am banked up but I have some leave coming up in a wee while, so I'll get some reading done then.
I found this book to be absolutely riveting, and I'll be buying my own copy. It was very well written, and despite being unable to like or empathise with the main character, I really wanted him to come to terms with his conscience. I felt when Amir returns to Afghanistan, the narrative became rather like a folk tale, but that's not a problem: the book was was overall about atonement, and many folk tales have that theme -- redemption of some kind. For me, the book's background and setting was very interesting, as I was hopelessly ignorant about the turmoil in Afghanistan, and I'd like to think that this book gave me a better understanding of it.
Thanks for sharing Michyj. I'll be popping it in the post back to you today.
