it's your average story... young ingenue joins opera house in the late 19th c., irks old hack of current soprano, falls in love with handsome gentleman, and is tutored by mysterious stanger. mysterious stranger goes on killing spree and kidnaps young ingenue. blah blah blah :-D
so, yeah, it's *that* Phantom of the Opera story.

sent as a surprise RABCK to daintress in FL.
A girl I went to HS with (but didn't know very well at the time) was re-introduced to me through LJ. We got to be friends, and she was looking through my Amazon wishlist, and saw this, so she sent it to me!!! I was so surprised.
When I've finished reading it, I suppose I'll send it along, so she'll have the fun of tracking it here.

Reading is complete. I loved it! In the movie version, Christine was such a completely helpless PUTZ. She kept going back to the Phantom even though she was afraid of him, but it seemed as though it was more out of love than pity. How do you love an unrepentant murderer? The movie made her stupid. In the book, however, she was just portrayed as brave (she didn't whine nearly so much as the movie made out - she tried to handle it on her own and not get Rahoul involved at all!), and she pitied Erik. She pitied him so much that she wanted to sing for him one last time. Which is why she was on stage. It wasn't that Rahoul wanted to use her as BAIT! All the characterization was much better in the book. I loved it. I've had it available for several days, but no one has claimed it, so I'll be releasing it into the wild shortly.
